Well, it looks like MasterCraft unveiled the first diesel-powered competition waterski boat this week in Ireland. I am interested to see whether this technology takes off. I believe in the potential of diesel engines. They are much more efficient than gas engines in certain circumstances, and I would think that they might do very well in a ski/wakeboard boat. MasterCraft's prototype is powered by a Volkswagen Marine engine! It will be interesting to see whether CC and PCM offer a diesel in the near future. MasterCraft's diesels will be available to the public within the next twelve months.

RE: Will Correct Craft/PCM Offer Diesel Engines?
CC has had one out for a year in the European market I believe. Any commercial use boat in Europe such as a resort boat, or parasail boat and things of that nature are required to be diesel powered for 2007. I heard the only problem is production quantities are so low its a very expensive option as of right now. Maybe in the future it will come down in price as it gains popularity.

I have heard that skiers choice (supra\moomba) has one they are testing. It is supposed to be ready for 07'.2005 Ski Nautique 206 SE, Acme 422, PP SG 8.0, ND Tower

Additionally you could run off road diesel fuel in a boat, and that will save you ~$0.50 a gallon on the already reduced ammount of fuel you will burn.

Excelent point, I had not even thought about off road deisel. You can but it at the farm stores, and at some gas stations.2005 Ski Nautique 206 SE, Acme 422, PP SG 8.0, ND Tower

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that either. With gas, you have to keep all of the receipts and file with the DMV at the end of the year to get that money back.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. You can't even smell the new auto diesels when you follow them on the road. Also, imagine the low rpm power. You could turn a pretty large pitched prop or save mpg and go with a traditional pitched prop.2016 SAN 210

RE: Re: Will Correct Craft/PCM Offer Diesel Engines?
All I know is my F250 Diesel blows away any gas truck engine out there, hand's down. The exhaust is invisible and you can barely smell it. Alot of that has to do with the EGR system which I am not sure a marine engine has. With no emissions on boats, I would tend to think there would definately be some diesel smell, I know my truck's diesel has alot alot of emissions stuff on it, especially the tuning of the engine.
New Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel fule will be out soon and it is definately wise to wait for the redesigned engines, at least on the boats. Servicing might be an issue though, you are dealing with some different issues, not that they couldn't catch up. I would love to have the torque though and the efficiency of a well designed diesel engine.

RE: Re: Will Correct Craft/PCM Offer Diesel Engines?
The Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel IS out now.
The main reason diesels are so efficient, and don't really "blow black coal" any more is in turbo charging.
Diesel engines and Gas engines work on two totally different theories. Gas engines can NEVER run really lean for fear of burning the engine up. Diesel engines on the other hand can run as lean as you want them, and it is actually worse to run a diesel engine too rich than too lean. When you see the truck blowing black smoke and smelling like diesel, it is because he has a bad chip that is just dumping too much diesel into the engine. A diesel engine does not have a throtle body or "butterfly" as some people call it. The engine speed is entirely dependent on the amount of fuel being fed to the engine. This means that with a turbo on the engine, you can cram a bunch of air down there, and spray just the amount of fuel you need to make the power you need. With this lean burning of fuel, you can also get a more complete burn of the fuel. By only using the fuel you need and burning it more efficiently, you can have better economy, and almost none of the diesel fumes.
I know this is all very simplified, but the facts are that diesels are much more efficient than gas powered engines. The other side benifit is they respond to power adders much better than gas engines do. A 7.3L Powerstroke left the factory with about 225 HP and 500 Ib of Torque. With a chip and larger turbo etc..., it can produce over 700 HP and 1,300 Ib of torque. Try that with a gas engine.
Also, I don't really like sucking the fumes of my gas engine, and I bet a properly tuned diesel would produce LESS fumes.

RE: Re: Will Correct Craft/PCM Offer Diesel Engines?
Good post ag.
I bought my first new truck and made it the ford 6.0l diesel. It's insane right out of the box without any modifications. I noticed alot of different things that the truck did that gassers don't do. In particular I can ease the peddle down on uphill and the turbo spools up and the RPM's barely budge and the truck does not downshift, it's like easing up the power without asking the tranny to do anything. I am still learning how to drive it right, it's a little different. The power is amazing and it just loves to go, plain and simple. I can accelerate uphill very rapidly with the SANTE in tow.
I would love to have a diesel boat, especially if they tuned the engine to handle heavily weighted boats and getting them on plane quickly. It would be a dream.

Diesel
Hi there,
Januari 2006 I saw the Mastercraft with this VW diesel engine at the Dusseldorf boat show.
It was a mid-enigine, the cover was off. My first impression, it needs much more space. Turbo's insulation, several heat exchangers those spacious things are extra found. No fresh water cooling. Casting are all aluminium, heads included.
Further I would not by happy. Why? Classic diesel or classic turbo diesel engines are simple no electronics, just to shut it down you need an electrical relay and a starter to start.
The last decennium European automotive diesel technology shoots all records on horsepower and torque, how? Electronics do the job, lots of electronics. And also lots more high tech to keep emmisions down.
So within guarantee I would not be afraid, with a well equiped dealer.
Futher such engines will for sure drive the price of a boat skyhigh. The price was approx USD 22800,- for the V6 225HP VW marine engine unit ready to run.
VW has V8 and V10 upto 300HP but not jet marine, as far as I know.
So I think your boat will be USD 10.000 more. In the automotive sector it has been petrol or diesel was the same investment, last decenium a diesel is about 5 to 10k more on investment, it looks more marketing commercial to me, the old diesel Mercedes in the 70s had 70HP and evaluated to 300HP+ know, mximium speed is still 50, only sound improved, the accoustic diesel knock has been tuned out by the electronics, and also electronic diesel consumption halved, but against what price.
Conclusion for fuel economy it isnt worth, by far, unless you drive your boat 12 hours a day 7 days a week.
