Has anybody converted a single axle trailer to a double

I know that this may be a bit of a contentious subject, but has anybody converted a single axle trailer to a dual axle? I know as far as weight distribution and balancing there needs to be extremely precise measurements, but other than that, is there anything that would be a deal breaker? I like the traler that I have, it has a bolt on axle which may be moved. Everything I have seen for sale is less than good condition, or too far to pick up. A custom made trailer is the next step, but if the same guys whom I would buy the custom trailer from would modify my current one, would there be much of a difference? Any thoughts?

I had my trailer converted last fall and love it. I had the original manufacturer of the trailer do the conversion. It's not hard at all, but I would have some one do it that has built a tandem for your style boat before. It was cheaper for me to have mine converted than it was to sell my existing and just a buy a brand new one. All in all I spent about $2,700 with all new custom wheels and tires. That included a spare with matching wheel. The best part is I have two 5200lbs axles now so its super beafy.

      Bchesley,

I'm in the market for a trailer and don't want to plunk down 4g's like most manufacturers want for a nice double axle or even a nice single for that matter. Most people with used trailers i've found, want what they paid years ago and i can't bring myself to do that. Just curios how you went about finding a nice one at a price, every time I post anything regarding trailers I get zero response on any site! I know there is an angle into an affordable trailer somehow!!

My advice would be to start calling the Dealers that are close to you and see if they have any used or know af anyone that has one for sale. The internet community of boating is growing , but still a small segment. The dealers are the largerst network.

$3500 for the generic twin axle Shorelander galvanized at Nautiques Orlando....the same trailer retails at various places online for as low as $2699

            that was predictable.

www.BoatTrailerSupply.com I believe, it actually was the first or second place when I googled "Inboard Trailers".

I used a borrowed shorelander twin axle from my buddy to get my boat up the coast from where i bought it, it actually towed very nicely and loaded easily...the only issue i saw with it was the quality of the hardware, especially attaching the bunks to the rails. He had only used the trailer twice since purchase six months ago, fresh water only, and every nut and bolt on the thing was heavily rusted. If the hardware was 1/4 inch holding the bunks to the pivots I would be surprised! All U-bolts....toasted! I understand u must maintain your equpment, but the thing only saw water twice before I used it.

He bought it for $3k out the door locally, and it was fitted to his boat (slid the axles back and trimmed the bunks down a bit).

So $3500, no bowstop, plus tax tag n title...?
