Electronic Actuator for 1 Piece Engine Hatch lifts but won't lower

The electronic actuator for the 1 piece engine hatch on my 99 Super Sport has never given me a problem until this weekend. It raises fine but when I try to lower it I get a faint clicking noise but it will not lower. Since it is working in one direction but not the other I am thinking that it may be the switch itself or a relay. I didn't have time to trouble shoot yesterday so for the time being I just knocked the pin out so I could manually lift and lower the hatch. I'd like to get this fixed soon so any advice would be great. I did some searching and found these threads but any other advice would be great.

Hey Shawn, I had this problem last weekend on my 99. I had the hatch up working/cleaning on the boat and when I went to close it, it wouldn't go down. My immediate thought was that it was the switch since it would go up but not down. After tracking down a similar switch (6 prongs on the back, on-off-on) and replacing it, it still would not go down. I then moved to the relays, and this should have been where I started. I replaced both of them and she has been working great ever since and I now have a new switch too... Hope this helps

Thanks Conor, this definitely helps! Do you happen to have a part number or a link for the relays that you used?

No I don't actually. I just took detailed pics of the wiring with my phone and removed the relays, took them to the auto parts store and found the match. They are not the same brand but as long as the info on them is the same I believe you should be good.

Hey Connor, I have been really busy lately between starting a new job and getting the nursery ready for our first child but it looks like I will finally have a little bit of time to sort my actuator out this weekend. I was wondering if you could tell me where the relays where located so that I can save a little bit of time hunting for them. I took a quick look under the hatch by the battery and the actuator and did not see them so I am guessing that I probably need to get the dividers out of the way and look harder? Or am I looking in the wrong spot?

The relays that came on my boat were labelled hella "4RD" followed by 960 388-16. I could not find these for sale anywhere. So, I bought some new RLYB1S4 (HL87429) relays from www.rallylights.com and they worked great.

The relays were taped to a harness that runs across the top of the transmission with a bunch of other wiring. Just follow the wires from the actuator, and you will find the relays. I don't think you need to remove any dividers to access them. You may need to remove the rear seat.

Thanks so much 406! I found the part number on rallylights.com(http://www.rallylights.com/rlyb1s4-r...-resistor.html) but one of the images they show makes it look like a 5 pin relay but the other images and the model # makes me think it is a 4 pin relay? Do you remember if it was a 4 or 5 pin? It looks like Autozone has 4 pin (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...er=203873_0_0_) and 5 pin (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...questid=134062) relays with the same specs and I can have them shipped to store in time for the weekend but I am not sure which to order.

Good to see another 99 Python Super Sport out there. I have heard that there were less than 15 Super Sports/Super Airs ordered with the 502 in 99.

Thanks everybody for your help! I am pretty sure this is an equivalent part from Autozone: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...questid=134062

I am going to try these since I could get them quickly and I will let you guys know if they work. If not I will get the ones from rallylights.com that 406 used.

Ok it turns out that http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...questid=134062 is NOT the correct relay. I carefully switched out all the wiring to this relay and I put the switch up and it lifted, I then put the switch down and it started to lower so I thought I was good until I put the switch back to neutral and it kept trying to lower. Moving the switch did nothing all it wanted to do was lower. I figured I had the wrong type of relay since Autozone could only give me minimal information and were not very knowledgeable. So I swapped back to the old relay and and amazingly everything works correctly now and it worked flawless all weekend. I can't explain it but everything seems good. I will return those Autozone relays and order some of these (http://www.rallylights.com/rlyb1s4-r...-resistor.html) so I am ready when they do fail.

This is what NAPA came up with.

                      Not sure if it's right.
