For those of you waiting to upgrade or buy a boat this summer, you patience is about to be rewarded. Up for sale is what many would consider to be the ultimate 1st Generation Super Air Nautique – 2002 SANTE, black with black deck and white stripe (2002 catalog boat) with an 8.1 / 496 Cu In Python big block engine. While equipped very, very well from the factory, the careful and very professional modifications made to the boat bring it up to modern levels of wake and audio performance.

    The story:

First, she came from the factory with matching black deck and hull – striking in any color but especially so in black. Then the original owner added the 425 HP and more importantly 505 Ft-Lbs of Torque 8.1 L Big Block PCM Python engine option. These are rare as the premium at the time of purchase was $9,000. The power of this engine is remarkable, as is the exhaust note from unmuffled dual 4” exhaust ports. If you love the rumble of pre-Inverta Flow boats…this is the modern Nautique for you. The engine does not use a drop of oil (characteristic of the earlier 8.2/502 Pythons) and has been bulletproof. Gas usage is very close to the GT40 and GM Small blocks unless you play in the upper ¾ range of the throttle. I don’t therefore I haven’t paid a gas penalty. AmsOil fluids / WIX-NAPA filters keep her running strong.

Additional factory items include: Pop up cleats, Air/Water temp gauge, Perfect Pass, Depth Finder (crap Humminbird replaced with Faria in 2010), Clock, Heater, Shower and retractable stern light. The digital gauges were replaced once and continue to work well.

Condition – the boat has been very well cared for and its condition reflects it. I’m the third owner and bought it from a guy who owned it since 2003. He was obsessive and I am too. The interior is next to spotless. The vinyl is soft, seams tight and bright; I buy 303 by the gallon. My kids were only allowed Sprite and white corn tortilla chips – if I found a Cheeto on board I’d have one less tax deduction – if you know what I’m getting at. Now we have a beater pontoon for them to eat on – cheap insurance for keeping the Nautique nice.

The gel cote is exceptional as well. It was rubbed out and buffed in 2011 that brought the ever-so-slightly hazy black back to a deep, uniform black. While not perfect, it is definitely exceptional, especially for a 10 year old boat. It won the 2011 Best In Class award at the CorrectCraftFan.Com midwest reunion.

There have been several upgrades to the boat, all executed to a very high level. Audio has been improved, electronics upgraded and an incredible ballast system was installed in this boat in 2010. More details to follow.

    Audio

Audio – a new Clairon CMD 6 was installed with iPod and USB extensions into the pockets below the head unit. All interior speakers were upgraded with Polk MM series which look and sound very nice. The 12" sub woofer was relocated from underneath the observers’ seat to the drivers’ kick panel where you can actually hear (and feel it). Now there is a ton of storage under the observers seat once you get the crap out of the way.

Speakers are nothing without ample amplifier power. Three JL Audio marine amps were added – MHD-600/4 600W 4 channel Class D for the four main interior speakers, a MHD-750/1 750 watt Class D Monoblock for the sub and a M2250 Class D amp for the bow speakers. Taking ideas from Planet Nautique’s forums, I created an aluminum back panel and attached it with 9 aircraft stand-offs to the hull, tucked up underneath the combing pads out of harms way (see photos for details). Class D amps run cool and are very efficient, drawing less power for more hours of listening while at the sand bar or party cove. All wiring was done with marine rated tin plated fine strand wire from TinnedMarineWire.com, crimped, soldered and shrink tube protected. The only exception is the speaker wire was replaced with 12 g Monster Cable 12 gauge fine gauge copper wire (shown in white in the photos). This setup is crystal clear and sounds great.

I don’t run tower speakers (although the Boss units I took off come with the boat). I fold my tower down every weekend to get the boat up under the lift canopy and the tower speakers were a pain. Plus, we didn’t use them much – just a personal preference.

The images show the new head unit, amplifier mounting, sano wiring and subwoofer and driver's speaker setup.

      Electrical Upgrades

Electrics – A new battery box was cut and fiberglassed in under the starboard rear seat that houses 2 of the biggest Optima Blue tops (see pics). These are isolated for just audio and auxiliary electrical loads. A Hellroaring isolator/combiner keeps the staring battery isolated for engine and primary electrical loads and automatically charges the Optimas once the starting battery is at peak charge. All wiring is super sano and done in the proper gauge with the correct marine rated materials (see pics). An 8 GA positive and negative feed was run to the helm to eliminate voltage sags in the dash (more good ideas gleaned from the forums).

Images show rear of boat with back seat and riser removed, detail of the dual auxiliary batteries, starter battery, isolator/combiner and ballast pump controller and 8 GA feeds to helm and buss bars.

        Ballast System

Ballast – I’ve never seen a ballast system created like what I’ve put into this SANTE. SIX Ballast Puppies permanently plumbed and controllable from the helm for the ultimate in wake control (surf, wakeboard or skate). The six zones are: port and starboard rear lockers with 750 or 1000 lb FatSacs, factory belly hard tank, bow sac (v-sac for wakeboarding, 200 lb wedge sac to one side for surf) and a port and starboard pigtail with quick connects for automatically filling and draining FatSacs in the cabin. NO MORE TSUNAMIS OVER THE GUNNEL TO FILL INTERIOR SACS. All of the zones are fill/drain and tuneable from the helm to create the exact wake you want.

The problem with this design was how to control it from the helm. I didn’t want to butcher the helm with 6 big, ugly rocker switches rated for 15 amps. So, I created a keypad controlled pump relay panel. I had CNC’d a push button keypad with LED indicators for fill/drain made to fit where the warning sticker is to the left of the steering wheel. Press the blue button to fill, yellow to drain. This communicates to a relay panel near the starting battery under the port rear seat. This keeps all the pump wiring really neat and short (eliminating voltage drops). Besides, can you imagine running source power then 12 quantity 10GA wires run up to the helm then back to all the pumps? That would really suck. Every circuit is fuse protected for 15 amps as well. Super sano and bulletproof. Check the pics for the installation quality. I’m a bit obsessive…

An aluminum bracket was made for 2 pumps in the ski locker. I made two carpet over CPES’d wood mounting boards for two pumps in each storage locker. They feed the locker ballast and the second feeds the pigtails for interior bag placement.

I’ve shown and example of port surf wake. This is kind of tricky to dial in with a 1st gen SAN. I have the 1000 lb rear port locker filled to about 800 lbs, belly ¾ full, 400 lb FatSac on the observer’s chair and a wedge sac in the port bow filled with 150 lbs of weight. There is only the driver (about 195 lbs) and the scrawny little kid (55 lbs) in the boat.

          Extras

There is a long list of extra parts that will go with the boat.

6 FatSacs, all 2 years old or less
          - 1000 lb I use in the port rear locker
          - 2 qty 750 lb rear locker sacs
          - 2 qty 400 lb wedge sacs
          - 1 qty V-bow sac
          - 1 qty 400 lb sac for either port or starboard interior use

          2 AMCE props
          Bimini top and mounting hardware
2nd set of Boss billet board racks - mounts on the rectangular cross member of the tower. I think they can be used with the spinners in place.
          Nautique jump seat
          Factory hard tanks
          Factory engine dividers
          All take off parts
Super fugly tower lights...the mounting hardware is nice though.
A bunch of extra FlyHi fittings

The rear "Super / Air Nautique" decals for the sides of the boat were removed by the P.O. I have factory replacements that are not installed.

          New service parts:
          Impeller
          Fuel Filter
Back up impellers for the Ballast Puppies
          Oil Filter

What a sweet ride. Are you really sure you want to get rid of such a unique boat? Pythons are pretty rare, but I would be willing to bet that the black on black is one of a kind. Good luck with the sale.....

Thanks everyone. A tentative agreement to sell has been reached already. All other inquiries will be responded to in case the deal falls through.

I know I'll never replace this boat. The biggest problem I have is my lake house is on a very big lake and it gets really rough. I'm hoping for a ZR-6 220 or 230 with more freeboard in the next year or two.

Quinner, I'd be shocked if you had 750 nickles to spare.

The sub is in a sealed box appx. 1 cu ft, which is slightly undersized. It isn't a Polk sub and I can't remember what I used. I like sealed boxes because I want my bass tight and punchy. But that requires power. 750 watts does the trick very nicely.

You would have needed to been checking this thread continuously to catch this deal. The new owner contacted me within 8 hours of posting and had the full purchase price wired into my account 8 hours later. His dad and son came to pick up the boat last Sunday. The boat will split its time between central Michigan and Austin TX.

Sad to see her go but the new owners are as excited to have her as my family was.

Thanks to all who inquired. I wish I had 6 more to sell...

For those interested in more detail regarding the projects I did on the boat, feel free to email me. I don't check PM's often.
