    ZR6 in a 211

OK, I'm back looking for a little more specific info. Please bear with me. I just spent about 2 hours reading every post I could find on the ZR6 motor but am still confused. Some say it is a gas hog, others say it is marginally worse than a 330 ex, and some say it is actually more efficient. What is the story. I WILL be slalom skiing behind the 211, and I will also be cruising Tahoe and running the boat upriver at home for dinners sometimes(45min ride, usually at about 35mph). What specific gallons per hour are you guys seeing with the 330ex vs the ZR6 in these situations. I don't want to re prop the 330 for all hole shot to wind up turning 4000 rpm when skiing or cruising. I do like the closed cooling system since I am in salt water 90% of the time. Help me out, I'm going insane!

    RE: ZR6 in a 211

Closed cooling- HUGE pro if your in salt water, plus your heater wont get eaten by the salt
A ZR6 will need less throttle to get up to speed meaning less gas. I love my ZR6 and would get it again with no reservations.

Old Bu' with Monsson I had to floor it to get it up to surf speed fully loaded with a Moonson 330hp. The ZR6 I just ease into the throttle.

Good cruising speed for my 210 for gas purposes is around 25-30 mph.

    Def for ZR6

      RE: ZR6 in a 211

I have not read all your posts, but I have some thoughts on this. The 211 is a fairly heavy boat, and the fact that you are going to run the boat at some altitude, (Lake Tahoe) tells me you want the ZR6.
The amount of power required to move the boat through the water is a function of your speed, and weight. I would think that under most conditions, same speed, same weight, same trim, the two engines will not differ on fuel consumption, until you approach the higher speeds, at that point the Excaliber engine will change its fuel management to a richer setting, because of the power demands, while the ZR-6 may still be able to stay in a lean cruise mode. The fuel consumption advantage may go to the ZR-6 at this point. However if you run the ZR-6 hard enough to get out of the lean cruise mode, it will use more gas.
This might account for the differing reports of the ZR-6 getting better, or poorer fuel consumption than the Excaliber.
If you are looking at a new boat, the improved engine managment systems required with the catalyst engines might improve the fuel consumption of the boat, or it might not. I do not know. Too early to tell.
By far the biggest influence on fuel consumption is how you use your boat. Load the boat with lots of ballast, and gear, drive fast, you will use lots of gas with either engine. Once the boat is on plane, the faster you go, the amount of power to drive the boat goes up exponentially. Twice as fast, four times the power.

I have the ZR6 in an 07 211. The only time I think hog is when we are surfing. When I fill up those two tanks to surf, the noise I hear (in my head) is the wild feral hogs screaming and grunting down the hill toward my deer feeder.
Other than that, I have been happy with the consumption. I haven't driven an excalibur, but the ZR6 power is impressive. It will get up over 44mph pulling a footer quickly and easily.

Cant Ski, I think I am running a good all around prop that might do what you need, it's the 1160/61 (depending on year-rotation). I seem to recall the Acme guys telling me that it was the prop for the ZR6 on heavy or heavily loaded boats. The 1234 is definately the way to go on the 330ex if you run a big load and don't mind losing 2-3 mph top speed. I still barefoot, one-footers with my nearly 200lb mass take everything I can get out of the 211, I don't run much load over stock.

I have whatever prop came on the 07 211 TE. Since I now have the additional slalom boat, should I re-prop the 211 for wakeboarding, surfing, footing? I have been running stock ballast, but plan to add some POP bags.

1234 with the 330EX works great. I put one on last year and love it. Lost 2-3 on the top, but we don't barefoot. I think it raised the RPMs @ 34mph by a few hundered, not so much that I'm worried about the revs. I'd recommend it if you are Wakeboarding and add weight.

How does a thread about a ZR6 motor turn into a thread about Excalibur props? Maybe start a new thread so I can get the info I was looking for in this one. Thanks

IF YOU GO THE EXCAL ROUTE YOU LL REGRET IT TRY TEST DRIVE ONE OF EACH IF YOU CAN THE ZR6 IS LIGHTER ON GAS AND YOUVE GOT THE CLOSED WATER COOL IF YOU ADD THE COST OF CLOSE WATER COOLING TO THE EXCAL YOUR NEAR THE PRICE OF A ZR6 ANYWAY WHICH YOULL NEED FOR SALT WATER ANYWAY

I re-read your post and it sounds like you're confused on the performance /gas consumption of the ZR6 and not turning high rpms with a 330EX. I think we just wanted to give you info on the revs of the 330 and the props we use so got first hand info and were not guessing.

I can't comment on the performance of the ZR6 and it's gas consumption first hand, however I went with the 330EX because the gas consumption was supposed to be less and the higher RPMs were not a factor when cruising or skiing, but that's just me. If you keep a stock prop on it it will work greatas all around. I added more weight for wakeboarding and wanted the extra pull from the hole.
