I just purchased my first Nautique a week ago also !!! It's a 1984 SN 2001 . I'm getting ready to do alot of elbow work on it. carpet, gauges, paint etc. the biggest question im facing right now is that in nuetral the prop is still spinning and engauged. the velvet trany is only two years old . it runs and goes from forward to nuwt to rev fine but when in nuetral the shaft wants to stay spinning. the porevious owner says its done it for a long time even before the new trany. he also said that after it warms up it quits. i think he's nuts . im taking it down to our local marina to get there advise. any ideas??? also trying to find a replacement strainer bowl for the water intake. found one on the Vetus Marine web site for $95. is that the only one? also having trouble finding vintage decals and stuff, any ideas? thanks cant wait to chat and share ideas and upgrades .

RE: My first SN ! 1984 "2001"
congratulations on the new ride!
these are great boats that rarely need work, and when they do it is easy to do. first thing i would check on your tranny is that it is actually in neutral when you put the throttle in neutral..... this is very easy to do, just put your shifter into neutral, walk back to the tranny and locate the cable linkage. there is a notch/dimple that the bracket slides into and indicates neutral. play around with the shifter and ensure that the bracket is sitting in that dimple when in neutral. if it isn't, this is the problem and can be fixed by adjusting the cable length at the tranny linkage. if this isn't the problem, it will be an internal issue that you'll probably want to let a mechanic tackle, unless you are comfortable with digging into it.....

i have an 87 and when im doing repairs on the trailer, the tranny will spin a little but if i put pressure on the sahft coming straight out of the tranny it will stop with very little presure....When im in the water and the boat is in nuetral the drive shaft will not turn at all. I also was wondering about this when i got my boat, i took the boat down to my local marine mech, and he said that when the boat is in the water the prop has enough resistance from the water not to spin. When its on the trailer there is nothing to resist it, he said there is nothing wrong with the tranny. I also have a velvet tran that has been rebuilt and has been running strong since i had it rebuilt 5 years ago....i hope this helps.

Thanks Guys ! I disconnected the linkage first thing and ran the control arm by hand. this was a new trany 7-14-06 ! i think th previous owner screwed up the install. when its in the nue position the motor idles down but the prop is spinning as if under load. its cranking at about the engine idle speed . i dropped it in the lake and we were cruising right along, in nuetral !!!
and yes when the bypass button is pressed so its engine throttle only,, the trany will make a noise and the boat will thrust as if its was trying to fully engage when i idle up. i found on another forum that the plates may be warpped but its a new trany.. thanks guys. ur great.\"It\'s not the size of the dog in the fight....It\'s the size of the fight in the dog.\"
