im having problems with my 351 commander with a holey carb....When i go easy on the throttle it will want to die , but when i hammer it down it will take right off....It is almost like the engine is being flooded.....it is basicly a short sputter then off she goes, i think im having carb problems but not sure?

RE: problem with engine stalling.... carb?
If you are familiar with carbs then I would check the floats and needles or buy a rebuild kit (could probably use one if it hasn't been done before) Your local marina can probably send it out for a rebuild as well which could run you $120 - $140.How 'bout a little reverse action...

could be timing/ignition related as well as a vacuum leak too.

RE: problem with engine stalling.... carb?
I don't know the details of this carb. But, in general, there are multiple jets that come into play as the throttle plate opens. Idle, main, and power. Perhaps the middle jet is plugged. I had this happen on a rochester. When you punch it, the acc'r pump squirts in more fuel and makes up for the losses.
I bought some of the foamy carb cleaner from quicksilver (mercruiser) and injected it into the bowl through the air vent tube. I let it sit overnight...then did the same thing with the engine running....each time until it almost died. Then ran it....it cleared completely after about half a tank.

First assuming your tune up is good:ie, wires, cap, plugs, points if you still have them then I would suspect the accelorator pump needs an adjustment. You stated you think it's being flooded but I think it's just the opposite. By stating that it stumbles when you give it easy throttle but clears when you jump on it I beleive that could be the cause. The Accel pump makes up for the momentary lean situation that occurs when you give the boat some throttle and open the butterflies.
You can find a manual online for this adjustment at the Holley site but you basically want it to squirt fuel immediately when you give it some throttle.
