    strapping Sport to trailer

The stern handles on my 90 Sport are above the swim platform preventing them from being used to strap the boat to the trailer. Thought about putting a single strap over the boat and attaching on each side. How are you guys strapping the stern of your boat to the trailer?

Also, there's no winch on the trailer. Previous owner just had an emergency cable attached but there's an unused bracket about level with the bow ring so I'm thinking there should be something else securing the bow. Any info appreciated.

    RE: strapping Sport to trailer

I have a 94 sport. I have a very solid turnbuckle up front. But I don't use anything to tie down the rears. There are previous posts about what other's do about this as there is no clear easy way to do it.

If there's no straps on the back from the factory it makes me wonder if they're necessary. I've always heard to remove the back straps when storing to avoid stressing the boat.

Anywho, that's another discussion. Does your turnbuckle look something like these?

What kind of fitting is on the bow ring end to allow it to hook?

On my 97 we attach the straps to the platform, this is what the dealer told us to do. Afterall, the platform is attached to the boat and the goal is to keep the boat tight to the trailer. I always strap the boat down before we go anywhere. As for the winch, I am sure there are ways to add it, I can't imagine not having it on some of those tougher ramps you run across.

My 206 will rock fore and aft on the ramlin trailer if not tied down with the gunnel strap or rear straps.

Whitelake told me that CC has tested it and the rear tie downs are not necessary (hence no brackets). I've seen people tie to the platform brackets. I don't want to do that because I don't think they're strong enough.

I use to use straps from the platform brackets down to the prop guard on my trailer. The strap hooks on my trailer are outboard on the trailer so I could not hook to them due to the pitot tubes for the speedos being in the way. Over time it bent my prop guard up a little bit so I quit. I have seen the boat move on the trailer a little bit if I hit any hard bumps but so far in 9 years it has not been a real issue.

I have intended to just add tie down points to the transom but haven't done it yet. When I talked to my dealer's service department their opinion was if the transon can handle the swim platform it can definitely handle a coupe of tie down loops.

I also use a gunwale strap and attach to Ramlin trailer.

They aren't necessary. Where will the boat go? You are attached in the front, sitting on bunks and you have sideguides to keep it from going off the sides on a fast turn. I have never used them on any of my boats, and I have never had a problem. I drive rather agressively while towing, also, if that helps your decision. I have seen morons forget to unhook the rear and try to launch their boat and sink it, though.

Where will it go? It will go right through the bow stop, and into or on top of your vehicle if you are in a significant crash. I have seen a 226 slide forward and bend the bow stop about 6 inches in a hard stop situation. Takes about a minute to strap from the trailer to the platform brackets. It's all about stopping or slowing down the momentum. Once a 4000lb + boat starts moving at any significant speed, a two inch pipe, or a 4 inch tube isn't going to stop it. BKH

Ever seen a boat sitting on it's side on the trailer sideways with the bow strap attached? I have, and that is why I use rear tie downs. It's very rare but in the event you hit an unknown bump, one big enough to get things airborne, it helps to have things strapped together so they don't come back together in an undesireable fashion.

Rear tie downs are also required by law in many states.
