    breaker tripping

Took the boat out today and had a great time. Dumped the tanks and headead to the trailer. When I got to the dock I noticed that my starbord tank did not empty. I had put some gear in the sorage over the tank and it pulled a wire out of the plug on the empty pump. I cut the wires away from the plug and just twisted them back in place eliminating the plugins. Tried to turn on the pump again and nothing. Checked the breaker and found that it had popped out. Pushed it back in and now it works but only for about 10 sec before it trips the breaker again. When I push the breaker button in and turn on the pump you can see the volt meter going down which eventually trips the breaker. Any suggestions???? I tried to see if metal was touching any of the wiring but couldn't find anything.

You just have to look at the wires. I had to fix a rear bilge pump not working, and found both the positive and negitive wires under a hinge for the rear hatch. It took about f years for the insulation to wear through , and cause a short. I also found a wire for trailer light wireing under a fender washer, holding step boards on a trailer.

          RE: breaker tripping

I am about ready to pull my hair out. I just took off the side wall on the entire dirver side of the boat. I cannot find anywhere that the wires are grounding out.
          Couple of questions.
the ground wire joins with the ground from the pump on the other side and that pump works fine. the brown wire goes all the way to the dash by itself. Could I ground the black wire coming from the pump straight to metal by the motor to see if there is a problem with the ground before it connects to the other ground wire
Could anything other than metal touching these wires cause this.

which impellers do you have on your pumps? yellow or black? the black impellers will trip breakers like it is their job.

I agree with just-in time. You need to isolate the problem. Run a wire off a 12v battery to the pump and use an in-line fuse. If the fuse blows, you have pump problems. If the pump runs fine you need to find the short.

Well I hate it when you are looking through threads trying to get info and the thread poster didn't tell you if they fixed a problem or not. Soooooo... I finally got some time to take out the ballast tank and remove the pump. I unplugged the wires from the pump on the other side and plugged in the suspect. Turned on the pump and 10 sec later the breaker tripped. so I am sure now that I have a bad pump. I plugged the other pump back up turned it on and everything works fine.
So now I need to get a new pump. should I go with what I have or get an upgrade. What kind/brand and what should I expect to pay for these.
                        Thanks
                        Justin
