Does anyone know the correct orientation of these thru-hull fittings? My '03 SAN has three of these, one for each ballast tank. The two rear fittings are faced forward so water is basically pushed in when driving. The front tank has on that is reversed. Is this correct or was there a mix up at the factory. My dealer gave me a bs answer about how they are supposed to be like that and a whole bunch of other garbage... I just want to know how everyone elses are set up.

Whether the story your dealer told you is right or not, remains to be seen/heard? I have heard many stories, some saying that it creates problems for PP, some saying that it pushes to much water that the valves can't stop it, and some saying that it fills the tank up too fast, (I know, I said What!?) But I do know for a fact that the Factory did that on purpose and they do have a reason for doing it. No worries....

The center ballast fitting does come back facing from the factory. I had to have mine changed to a flush mount because it was in line with the paddle wheel on my PP and the turbulence it was making made the PP not hold speed. I remember having to run the boat in reverse to get the pump primed for the center ballast.

Do you guys mess with the seacock valves at all? My '01 SAN had to knobs to close the vent so the tanks wouldn't fill while underway. Makes sense about the fitting now. I was told it was because the pump was so strong it would suck your hand in and a bunch of other nonsense. It is good to hear the real story for once.

I leave the valve open on my '02 all the time. We keep the locker hatch locked, Mainly because the dog loves stepping on the button and raising the latch. Then a couple minutes latter the wife or I will stub our toe on it. That makes it hard to open and close it in any quick fashion.
I don't know about the whole water pressure, but I tend to doubt it since it has a free air vent right out the side of the boat. The rear tanks are plumbed the exact same way, but since they are mostly above the water line there might not be the same problem. Either way the factory send the boat out with the belly tank fitting facing the rear, and the side tanks facing front. Also the belly tank is always the first tank full on my boat, and if the pump is off it still fills with in a few minutes of regular driving and sitting still.

Is it true that the helm ballast controls only open and close the air vent in the side of the boat? I think I heard that somewhere, but I might be making that up.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. Wake_fun is correct, the helm ballast controls are in-line on the intake hose after the ball valve and you can open and close them from the helm. You should be able to see the valve for the belly ballast (center tank) just after the ball valve and before the ballast pump
