I have a 2000 Air and my previous boat was a 89 2001. There are some great points here and I'll try to add a little to help your decision making. First off, if you add 600 lbs + driver to a Sport/Air, you won't notice much difference in wake size. Put that in a 2001 and you have a very ridable wake. I ride with 1300-1500 in my Air (all hidden) and think 1800 or so would probably be just right. In my 89, 1200-1500 was plenty but you can only hide so much. We (my wife and I) did get tired of crawling over fat sacs. Decreasing the steepness of the 89 wake also took a little more effort in weight placement, the 2000 is rampier by nature, although nothing like a Malibu.

What if you also wanted to potentially barefoot and slalom from time to time? Would you still consider a "2001" the best choice?


I notice that 90-94 SNs are often as inexpensive as "2001"s that are much older. I don't like open bow boats as much and hate people sitting in the bow anyways. But I suspect the SPORTS were built as a more "all purpose" craft.

Does this mean that (like other unrelated stuff that was multi-purpose built) the SPORTS don't do anything really well ??

I'd like to own a Nautique that:

Is able to create a firm knee high wake at boarding speeds.

Is able to flatten / soften wakes at slalom speeds.

Is available for purchase under 12K in good shape with tandem axel trailer.

may as well give my 2 cents too.

okay i have a 98 sport with fact. ballast and a tower so its pretty much a air.ihave 2 good friends who each own nautique also(they to blame for my addiction now :mrgreen: )one has a 86 2001 one and it does throw a nice wake with very little weight or people.but after you get 3 or 4 folks in the boat it does get a little annoying after a few sets with the constant musical chairs for each rider.lets face it, they are small, efficient boats that throw great wakes,but for a whole day on the water, with a full (5-6) people they can get cramped.my next friend has a 94 cb ski nautique plain jane except for a fly high pole.he's a big guy pushin' 260 or so and he'll bust out tantrum,inverts, etc. all day long out of his old school,no ballast,about as small of a wake as you can get nautique.no kidding,you otta see the looks he gets.then theirs mine,good wake,nobodys cramped can spend all day on the water.now when we go, my boats the boat of choice..go figure. if you're close to a lake and aren't gonna spend ALL day out there go for the 2001.but if you're patient i've seen the sport/airs go for hight teens.as with my friend with the 94,you don't need an enormous wake.practice makes perfect 8-)

My 89 throws a great wake and it is also a great wake surfer. Have the fat seat but I am now changing over to a ballast tank in the rear and placing a fixed seat on top. Mine did not come with a rear seat, and I do not think that the seat would be reversable if there was one. For sking the wake is a little larger than most would like.

Yep, apples to oranes definitely, but I just want a comparison on the wakes. All the frills are just that, frills. Non-essential for me at this stage.

Hey, did you buy that boat from a guy in Austin? If so, I just called about that boat to find out it was sold! GRRRR!!!! But no problems man... enjoy it and report back on the wake!
