Air 216 surfing...boat is a dog!

We have always surfed behind my Air216. I recently upgraded to a new '08 and a buddy got a Moomba Outback V. There is a night and day difference pulling up surfers. Both boats are weighted down close to the same but his gets right up to speed and my 216 takes a while. His boat only has 323hp while mine has 343. We both have chevy's but his is indmar. Is that what is making the difference? Does the v-drive give it more hole power? I'm at a loss as to why his boat performs better.

Prop maybe ? Indmar is a good motor but in no way is it better than PCM.

I agree with rbalan, it's got to be the prop. Most direct drives come with a prop that sits more in the "cruise" category. A prop designed for weighted boats makes world of difference compared to a cruiser prop. Does your boat have a higher top end speed?

I also agree. I just put a team prop on mine and have improved the hole shot.

It has the stock prop on it. I want to say my boat will do around 45mph. Haven't really opened it up long enough to see if it will climb higher.

The hole shot is great for slaloming just not when the boat is weighted. It seems like the engine struggles a whole lot more than his Moomba does.

Are you using Zero Off? Because ZO, I believe causes the boat to increase in speed very slowly, when your target speed is slow like surfing. That is how my 210 performs, when we surf ZO will almost instantly beep the moment the rider gets up, then it slows the boat way down, and then slowly builds up to surf speed. it is a little weird but not a big deal. It is kinda cool watching the huge wave behind your boat slowly take shape. Just a thought, hope it helps.

I am using ZO and it does exactly what you say. Maybe I will try with ZO turned off and see if it pulls people up much easier. I'm just concerned that I could be putting too much stress on the boat.

Unless you have a problem with your running gear your boat is a water tractor. You could pull trees with it!

Give it a shot with the cruise turned off.

I doubt you are putting any stress on the boat at all, it is just getting you up to speed slowly. I'm sure the ZO guys programmed ZO to work this way. It works completely opposite of my old PP which would shoot up to 12-14 mph and then slow way back down to below surf speed and then start back up to it. I like it this way because it makes it easier to get up on the surf board and position yourself before the wave forms.
