    Taking on water

So my '01 SAN is taking on some water. Some = bilge pump on every 20 mins or so. I've only had her out 3 times since I bought it used, so it's been this way for a while, I'm guessing. Yesterday, we wanted to see if it was coming from the packing around the prop shaft, we thought maybe it just needs tightened. The previous owner claims he's never had it replaced (the boat has 350 hrs on it). Our problem was accessing it. Do I have to take out the back seat and all the housing around it to get to it? Is there an easier way? Am I missing something? I sold my '96 Super Sport, you could get to the packing relatively easily from the engine bay on that boat.

There also appeared to be water coming back out of the boat when I pulled it on the trailer. That was coming from the prop shaft and the access vent (?) on the starboard side of the prop shaft. Without looking, is that the impellar intake or the ballast intake? Either way, it's scary because maybe there's a loose fitting around a hose and that could go any second?

Any help, suggestions or otherwise is appreciated.
If I'm wrong, should I be looking anywhere else for the leak? There are no visible cracks in the hull, the plug housing is solid too.

    RE: Taking on water

Sure every one has different ways of doing this, but here is one I have used in the past, quite simple really put the boat on the trailer, set it on level ground, stick a hose under the engine bay and fill her up just above the packing gland, but don't overfill, incase you flood the starter..... Look for any water coming out under the trailer, if not then move the boat on the trailer to different degree angle instead of level ground, to check front and back. It probably is your packing gland or even your rudder seal, but thats easy enough to check by looking at them while the boat is in the water. My super sport actually have a leak at the transom end, just at the swim platform mounted. Hope this helps.

My SAN leaks through the screw holes for the plastic "cups" that cover the transom lift rings. The black plastic cups fit under the swim step, but mine kept breaking off. I got tired of putting them back on, so now I just need to patch the holes.
