    Trailer Bunk Carpet Question

I noticed a small rip/tear in the carpet on one of the main trailer bunks. It is about 6 inches long and lays diagonally accross the long bunk located about one third of the way back from the forward end of the bunk. The carpet still lays flat and looks adhered to the bunk. Will this rip/tear cause damage over time in launching and loading?

Is there a simple fix or does the entire length of carpet need replacing?

It is a DHM trailer. It looks like the bunk mounting bolts on the underside of the bunks penetrate the carpet on the back-wrap side (time consuming replacement).

(It probably is a newbie skeg gash but I'd never admit to doing it.)

    RE: Trailer Bunk Carpet Question

You can just patch it or go to Lowes, Home Depot etc and get indoor outdoor carpet and staple it on. Might want to check your bunks for rot and replace as needed. When they break, it is allways when you are trailering out of town. Did the bunks on my 99 Eagle trailer last year. Had to do the steps this year due to rotting out. Replaced with Alum diamondplate. The carpet Lowe's sells works great. It's called Olefin marine carpet.

What type of wood should be used? It looks like a standard 2x4 on mine, but I might need to replace them this winter.

I redid my DHM bunks about 3 years ago. I used Runner carpet from Home Depot and it is still going strong. It is really easy with a staple gun with Monel (Stainless) staples. you can take the bunks off or do it on the trailer. The bunks are 14' treated 2X6 on my 2000 196 trailer.

I called Lowe's about the carpet. The guy mentioned that the olefin marine was a berber carpet. This doesn't seem right. Is there more than one type of Olefin marine carpet?

Welcome to Lowes The guy you asked was probably from the garden department Olefin is a synthetic fiber. It can be woven into any style. Olefin Berber would work OK. I think most Berber is wool You wouldn't want to use wool.

There is an olefin berber carpet, but the one I have used on the bunks is what I suppose would be called a standard type of nap (sp?).

There are a few different Olefin carpets at Home Depot. I got a sample , so I'll compare it this weekend.
