I found a 2001 wastin' in the weeds!!

I have been dying to tell people all day about my find but The2001.com and correctcraftFan won't work right so I can log-in

I have been so interested in these 2001 ever since I caught a glimpse of them on various sites and heard aboiut how great they are for wakeboarding. I don't have the cash for a ritzy wake boat but the 2001's seemed like a perfect fit. I am on a small lake as well so the size is just perfect!

Anyhow, I've been traveling through this same stretch of road visiting my customers for the last 5 years and never realized just what was starring at me in the open lot next door... Today when I ran a delivery I noticed the boat sitting there, which I had many times before but the front air scoops cought my attention...as I now know what the 2001's look like and wala!! It's a ski nautique!!

Looks to be an early 80's model but it is is rough shape The entire boat will need to be brought back to life. There isn't even a seat in it to refurb, but the hull looks like it's all in tact just needs some serious TLC and a lot of elbow grease. I called the guy who owns the land as he is a customer of mine and he forwarded me onto the guy that owns the boat. I'm very curious to see what he wants to do with it as it's been sitting there for as long as I'm aware well over 5 years. It's right out in the elements so I'm sure the stringers are rotting and the floor is bad. The carpet was ripped off the walls and the plywood floor is exposed in the back. The trailer is relativeley decent with the exception of the flat tires that need to be tossed.

Does this seem like it would be worth resurrecting if I could get it for free or next to nothing? If nothing else I could bring the hull back to life and make it all custom for wakeboarding. I don't intend to bring it back to it's orig. stock form.

What do you guys think? I will try to grab some pictures of it tomorrow and in the mean time, try to get ahold of the guy that own's it. I'm praying he doesn't want much for it because there's no doubt it needs a complete restoration. Most likely the motor is even junk just from sitting all these years so I will have my hands full. however, I would be getting a 2001 and that hull is priceless for wakeboarding right!

Let me know your thoughts gang, I know my wife won't be thrilled if I get it but if it's free or **** near free I don't think I could go wrong at all but I'll certainly have some work ahead of me.

The engine might not be as bad as you think. If there is no water in the oil side, you might bring it back to 90% life w/o an overhaul.

This boat has potential. Will the hull be damaged where it touches the earth?

Not worth 2500. No interior, that will run you 2k if you're lucky and want it to look good. "Boat is in good shape. All original!" Does that include the factory optional blue stripe and red interior? Hopefully the strut, shaft and rudder have been pulled so it is not just resting on them. Those are all easy to find elsewhere. If money is no option then it could definitely make a good project but why not just buy one for 5-6K and go from there and save yourself the headache. I realize not all deals are the same but I bought a hull and some other bits for $200 and a complete '86 with a trailer and some minor fiberglass work needed for $1400. I'd keep your eyes peeled and be patient. Offer the guy $1000 and when no one pays 2500 for it on ebay see what he says.
How 'bout a little reverse action...

Agree and good point. I didn't even notice the price. Just the zero bids. I suggest negotiations should start in the "pay me to haul it off" range

Also, ebay boat is likely not the Cpool324's subject since he references a trailer and ebay boat is on the ground.

Hey, let's not spoil CPool's fun. He may have well found his diamond in the rough. I'll be interested to see what the guy wants for the boat, and if he gets it, I'll look forward to the progress on putting it back together.

Cpool, if you get the boat for nothing, or next to nothing, you can probably put it together for about the same
cost as you could buy a workable boat of the same year right now. This of course, does not include your time.
The "workable boat" may have worn upholstery and carpet, guages may not work, motor transmission and running gear might have minor issues, etc. Presumably, if you put the project boat back together, everything will be in good shape and ready for another 25 years.

In the end, I think it is a matter of how much you enjoy doing projects like this, and how much skill you have to do so, and how much time you have available to work on it.

I bought an 82 with a good trailer, good motor, and good transmission for $1500. It needed stringers, and a complete upholstery. Of course, I won't stop there, so I'll probably end up 6 or 7K into the boat. But, I like doing the work, I'm in no hurry (I've already owned the project for 1.5 years) and I have the luxury of a working boat, so I don't need to finish it, ever. Even if I decide to part it out, I should be able to get my money back, so I decided to take the project on. FWIW. BKH

Agreed, but the key is getting the boat for next to nothing, not 2500. I'm all about sweat equity like most of the people who like to restore these boats but when you adding all those hours on top of a hefty buying price it can get really price. The ebay boat has a trailer as well BTW airtool. Sounds awfully similar to this one, not to rain on the parade but this seller probably needs a reality check before you start throwing any money at him.

                  Hey guys,

Yah the boat needs a complete overhaul...looks like the back seat is in the boat just not attached or where it belongs :???: I have never done a project like this and I have been reading about what it costs people to refurb these...it can get expensive But I don't have the cash aside to buy a decent one and still fix it up. My father in law has a huge garage and is very familiar with overhauling auto's and big trucks etc. so as far as engine and trailer that's no prob. Boat would most likeley end up going the custom route and making a lot of the seating etc. myself. I know I would prob. get way over my head but I think over time...key word is time, I could bring it back to life. Again though you bring up a great point about how much it will cost in relation to buying a working boat that needs some cosmetics etc.

Decisions decisions... well so far the guy doesn't even answer his phone so the vibe I get from a) the condition and location of the boat and b) the fact that he never answers his phone and it goes to v-mail...that most likely the guy will want stupid money for it and it's not worth it.

Either way I'll keep ya posted.

My dream is to have one just like what you posted squaminboards...that grey boat and another one I saw from France just helped me fall in love with these boats.

Squam, is that grey boat yours? If so I would love to see it sometime for inspiration! I am in southern NH so I'm not far away.

Sorry buddy, didn't realize you are in NH. So the boat on eBay probably is not the same one then, huh . If you end up picking her up I have more 2001 parts than I know what to do with so if you need parts let me know. I'm up in Holderness, not far from Meredith and Plymouth if you need anything for the boat, I even have a trailer I'd part with or at least let you borrow to get the thing to your house. Always around to help out a PNer. The gray 2001 is up here, waiting for me to finish up projects so I can actually get to use it.

The eBay boat looks like it's been painted (too white) and I think I see a prop shaft coming out the hull. The coupler is there so my eyes are probably not lying to me. Looks like a parts boat instead of an overhaul to me.

Good luck on the NH boat, sounds like fun. I don't think I'd go more than triple digits on it.

Thanks man, I would love to see your boat sometime...that thing is a gem!! Really like to talk shop with ya and see just what I'd be getting into. Did you rebuild that from the ground up? I would love to do the same thing to this boat if it's feasable.

Oh and for what it's worth...the boat I found is not the e-bay boat This one is in bad shape though... I was hoping to get some pics of it today and put them up on here for all your feedback but it's raining. Squam can attest, we have been getting some crazy storms the last few days...fun fun, not very good for the lake but at least it's the week and not the weekend

Hey Squam, if you are ever going to part with that boat please let me know!! I realize now that this is the one the old CC employee rebuilt, I looked back in a few posts How did you score such a gem?

I really want to come up and see that boat though! Sounds like you know a lot about these things too after looking at your site.

Cpool, if you do end up getting her then if you ought to check out "weeding the pumpkin patch" blog on ccfan. Greg has done an outstanding jumping rebuilding the entire structure system in his barefoot nautique. He took a posted tons of pictures of his project from start to finish so you'll have a chinese blue-print to follow. Hope it all works out and you able to bring back to life yet another 2001.
If you can't do it in, on, or behind a Nautique..... It just ain't worth doing!

Thanks for the info morfoot! I talked to the guy that owns the land the boat is on and he said the guy that owns the boat is a real bone head, he said if he sees him he will try to get the boat for me or at least see if he wants anything for it. I'll let ya know if I ever get a response.

I'm off to find that post, sounds like some great info!
