    RE: Scratch

if it is on the bottom and it is purely cosmetic, I would not worry about it. I know it is hard to say that, but I am really picky myself when it comes to my toys but if it isnt structural and you cant see it, than why bother?

On Nautiques the gelcoat is thick enough that you should be able to wetsand and buff out small scrapes and scratches without any damage.

Get underneath the boat and try sanding it with 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper, then use a good buffing compound like Meguires professional cut #2 or 3 should do it. But if it is a deep scratch through the paint, then u might get a pro to do it

If it is a shallow scratch, you can wetsand and polish, and it will come out. If it is a deep scratch, you going to need to get some gel coat to fill the scratch, sand, polish, and done. Color matching the gel is the key, and can be difficult if the boat has faded, etc. BKH

what if the dammage is right under the rub strip?
I scratched my boat pretty deep ( 1/16'') while rushing it onto the trailer...which was too deep in the water and the stupid pole hit the side of the boat...right over the AIR logo.

Somewhere on this WEB site there is a excellent thread on repariing gelcoat, I used it last year when I was repairing mine. I searched, but could not find it. The most important thing is to purchased the color matched paste http://spectrumcolor.com/catalog.htm . For example, I have the standard white hull (silver cloud) and puchased a 2 oz jar - plenty for small repairs. Clean the area, tape off so only the repair area is exposed, apply like spackle, then depending on the area, wet hand sand with low grit to high grit (2000), then use a fine rubbing compound (polishing tool if available), finisher and wax. You can rear on your own to near perfect. 3M componds and finisher are recommended by most on this site.

I would get some of the Spectrum color gelcoat, and fill the scratch yourself. Since it is on the bottom, you do not have to do as perfect of a job as if it was in the middle of top of the bow.
Search this site, using "gelcoat" or you can also search under my name "DanielC" I have posted about gelcoat repairs.
I would suggest you get a quart of gelcoat, instead of the patch paste. You can let a small amount of the gelcoat sit out of the can, and it will thicken up, and you can use that to fill the scratch.
