    Boat insurance ???

Another noob question..... What is the concensus opinion on insurance carriers? Is SKI-SAFE ok? Their rate quote seemed reasonable.

Ski Safe - Pretty hard to beat. We suggest Ski Safe to all of our customers and have heard nothing but good comments back from our customers. Fast, Easy and a good rate.

I have my insurance through Boater's Insurance Agency. They were slightly more expensive than SkiSafe, but they didn't have a lay up period.

Great question for the State Farm insurance agent here. I am aware of some price differential in Ski Safe and State Farm, but I feel confident of our superior product and service. We waive deductibles on total losses, have towing included in the policy, and have replacement cost built in to the product. That means you purchase a stated amount of coverage for your boat and have replacement cost coverage. You are settled without depreciation as opposed to car insurance that follows the market. This can be important when your boat retains value like Nautiques do. Also, important is the personal service an agent can provide in making sure you are taken care of at the time you obtain the policy or the time of a claim. I have paid small claims when presented with an estimate for repairs.

Someone told me today that if you have an accident while towing your boat the boat must be covered under your auto policy and won't be covered by your boat insurance policy. This seemed way off base to me. Anyone ever heard of that?

The boat damage will always be covered by the boat policy, but the liability created by towing anything is always covered by the insurance on the towing vehicle. Example if the boat comes loose and kills someone or damages another vehicle, the liability comes off the auto policy to pay for the damages to the other party. Whatever happens to your boat, provided you cause the accident, will be covered by your boat policy. I heard of a Sport Nautique coming off the trailer and landed upside down in the interstate resting on the pylon. Did not even break it off. Unbelievable strength! Boat was totalled though.

I spoke with a guy from progressive about boat insurance and trailering.

For their policy the boat is covered by the boat insurance and the trailer is covered by the car insurance. Depending on the auto policy, the coverage for the trailer may or may not be enough.

Best bet is to talk to an agent about both policies so you know what you are paying for and what to expect when a mishap occurs.

My premium with Allstate is much lower than that for a '03 SAN, I am in Utah though....5-6 months of use, but it is insured year round...there is no black out dates.

We use BoatUS, it was the cheapest we found. I'm not exactly sure of how much it is, but I think it was under $400 on a 2001 Air .

As for liability and how much you need, I suspect anyone with a newer Nautique ($40K+) needs a libility umbrella due to net worth and or income. Liability umbrellas provide coverage after the auto, home and boat liability limits are exhausted due to a major liability claim. For example, if you hit a swimmer in the water and killed them with a boat, you might get a lawsuit. The boat liability would pay out if you are negligent, and then the liability policy (personal liability umbrella) would take over if your boat did not have enough liability coverage to protect you.
