I have a single axle Dorsey trailer for a 1998 196. Dorsey told me the approximate weight is 1300 pounds.
That sounds a little high to me, but you've got to figure at least 1000 for your trailer.

I tow with a 1996 toyota tacoma v6. It has a class III hitch and is rated for 5000lbs. It does the job fine. However, it is a long, low truck and that really helps in controllng the load. It works going up a hill, but it gets there.

I kinda figured around 1,000 lbs. A class III hitch would obviuously be safest for a long drive (over a class II)
