    Starter Question

I recently purchased a 1999 Super Sport Nautique that came with a 60 day warranty that is about to expire. Sometimes when I go to start the boat, when I turn the key the starter makes a click but nothing happens. After doing this about 4-5 times, the boat turns over. The marina that I purchased the boat from said that this is normal due to moisture in the in the starter. Is this accurate? Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

    Thanks!!

Have you checked the Battery connections? This has happened to me before, and the battery could be low or connections bad. I have had a lot of these boats and have never had a starter go bad. Check the battery and see if it has enough juice. Also, you may need to hit the ignition button when you are finished boating for a few days to keep the drain off the battery if there are any accessories that are not cut off (radio, etc)

Check the starter solenoid. My '93 Sport with the 351 has it mounted below the coil pack near the rear of the engine. Mine did exactly the same thing until it decided to stop working completely. It is a cheap, easy fix that will take all of 15 minutes if you are handy with tools. Tell the Marina to get their collective heads out of their a$$ and your wallet and replace it, if yours has the same setup as mine.

Thank you both for the advice!!!!!

I knew that "moisture" was probably not the answer!!

If you have a test light, you can turn the key and see if it is getting power to the starter relay light thevogt suggested. You can start your boat with a pretty low amount of battery juice. The new starter relay is about $30 and you can change it within a half hour. If you change it yourself, make sure you create a diagram so that you don't get the wires mixed up.

Yeah, starters don't make the "clicking" noise, it's the solenoid. I'd bet the farm on your solenoid, supposing all your battery wires are tight and clean.

I had the exact same prob with mine, and replaced the solenoid on tuesday. Its been working like a charm since. It did take me about an hour and a half to replace though. It wasn't easy to get at. I finally ended up removing my spark plug wires, and removing the 2 bolts that hold the computer/coil pack mounting bracket assembly to the block. From there, it was fairly easy to get to though.
