    Moomba Boomerang = slalom machine?

I am looking for an inexpensive boat to use in the salt water slalom course near my office. There is a nice looking 1997 Moomba Boomerang for sale in the local rag that has peaked my interest. He is a bit over my current budget but I would guess he would be willing to get close enough where we could make a deal.

I would prefer a very small boat, easy to tow and store, in the $5k range. I was thinking a late 80's M/C or something else, there are a few other options in my price range. I don't think I can find a Nautique in my price range, I would only consider a TSC Nautique so this jumps me to $10k+, which is too much.

Any opinions of the Moomba or recommendations for other cheap little slalom boats would be appreciated.

RE: Moomba Boomerang = slalom machine?

We tried to wake board behind one at a friend's cottage once. Even with 6 guys in it doing 20MPH we couldn't get a wake out of it worth mentioning.

It pulled very strong out of the hole. It slams down the lake if you are going anywhere far and in choppy water the ride sucks. You will get wet driving this craft and you can't get out of the wind as the windshield is very small. The side board is tiny and you will likely take on water in ocean conditions.

I would say if you wanted it for slalom exclusively on a tiny private lake or river .... it's perfect and cheap.

yep, it's a small lagoon, I will only use it for slalom. I will be keeping the tug 211 for lake use and boarding and surfing. I just want the little slalom boat to use for lunch or after work quick runs on the course.

You might could try and look at a Gekko...thats pretty much the same thing as a Boomerang I would think. We had a new 07 leftover at our dealership that would fly and had no wake behind it. He was wanting like $19,000 for it so I would think you could find one of them in your price range.

Guy in our club has a Boomerang as a second boat. Small with a great slalom wake also not bad for barefooting. Handles like a sports car. Used they are not that expensive and huge bang for the buck.

Pretty good slalom boat, a friend had one they called it a canoe with a motor....

The Boomerang is very similiar to the older MC's, I have been told by several boat builders in my area that the boomerang had a mold in common with the older stars and stripes MC's. It could be possible, since the Supra/moomba founder was a MC employee, and the plants were withen miles of each other.

You might also consider a brendella, if you happen to find one of them. Most of the Brendella's had PCM's.

Any way I envy your predicament, it would be nice to have a boat dedicated to chasing bouys, and one for hanging with friends and family.

I used to pull a friend that had one of those he used exclusively for barefooting. It was a rocket. I would say for what you want it to do it would be perfect. I Was used to ski nautiques and the only driving difference I noticed was the boomerang was harder to steer. It took more strength which may have been the steering cable on his particular one. Overall the boat has a cheap to the point feel. It is a towboat not a comfortable cruiser at all. Probably perfect for what you want

thanks guys, seems like the Boomerang may be worth some serious consideration.

sstexan - the 2001 hull is definately not perfect for my needs - I already had one for15 years. It makes a large skiing wake and I don't really want to deal with 20+ year old wood stringers/floorboards.

For ski runs, I LOVED my Gekko. Power, handling, and wake were awesome, as well as platform access. Quality left something to be desired and I needed more of a family boat. Frequently wanted to buy it back just for ski runs. I don't know about a boomerang, but a Moomba and and a Gekko are kissing cousins. I say go for it.

I will echo all of the positive things about the Boomerrang, fast, light, and cheap. The only problem that I remember with it is that it doesn't track as good as heavier boats. The light weight helps in all areas except tracking. But for course time, it may not be enough of a distraction to warrant not buying one. I would prefer a 10 yr old boat with fiberglass construction over a 25-30 yr old wood boat any day.
