    Mooring Whips

I'd like to know what your experiences have been with the use of mooring whips for holding your Nautique at a dock. It seems like a great way to keep the boat at a dock without touching the dock.

Do you attach the whips to the dock side cleats or to the lifting rings?

    I have a model year 2001 196.

    thanks

I, too, have often wondered about the whips and how they perform when a 230 has just gone by 30 yards from the dock.
I would think you would attach to the lift rings. Might be a little trouble on the bow of a 196.
Make sure they are firmly attached to the dock. I would hate for my wife to be able to reach over and snatch one of those puppies up.

The whips work very well. It really does not matter where they are attached, each whip plus a dock line will be attached at the bow and the stern. If your cover has access at one point or the other that could be the deciding factor. You can also just attach the dock lines to the whips and have a clasp or any form of quick connect attached to both.

        Mooring Whips

I use the whips at the dock..you should get these little mounts for the ploes to go it.
I put hooks on the end and att them ..one to the front lifting ring and the other to the back lifting ring,,keeps my boat about 3ft from the dock..Only way I ever tie to the dock...

Any suggestions on a good brand? Or do I just go down to West Marine or Overton's.

Dockside. I think? Mine came from Overton's. Mine are attached to the lifting rings with dock lines straight out to them. Then I cross tie to the cleats. Make sure you cross tie when using whips.

Had my 196 on whips this summer at Lake Tulloch. I attached them to the lifting ring on the bow and the handle on the stern. Worked Great!

Whips hold my ski boat as well at the 36 footer with no problem. The only way to keep the boat off the dock and by their design they provide some give unlike a rope that comes tight.

I/we made our own. Used 1 inch gav. steel and 1 inch Water PVC. Cost about 75.00 to make. About ever other year I have to replace the PVC for 10.00. Tie your boat so it does not move forward to back. Let the ropes from the PVC just keep the boat away from the dock.

Also I have a set of PVC that I use for houseboats and temp docking. They are about 4 feet long with rope through and a hook on one end. The other end is about 4' of rope.
