    Who owns the calm water?

This comes up occasionally in various threads but thought I'd post it directly. Fisher's hate skier's, skier's hate boarder's, almost everyone hates tubers. NOT.

What people hate are any of the inconsiderate of the above. The regular users of our lake are varied, but everyone tries to respect everyone else. Depending on wind and direction there may be one or two places to slalom (and that only maybe 2 days per week) and the boarders and tubers generally avoid those. Actually, the tubers almost always stick to the middle where it's always too choppy to ski. I mostly slalom and we try to avoid the fishermen as best we can. None of this costs anyone very much and significantly increase the enjoyment for everyone. Once in the local pub I was even tempted to buy a round for all the tubers and boarders who stayed out of coves, however I knew there were 4 boats on the lake that day doing so, but there'd be 30 in the pub who'd swear they were.

The problems come mostly on the weekends and sometimes during the week with yahoo's who don't get this and run S's with tubers in the calm coves (seems like it's never a CC though :-). I'm guessing these are the cousins of the oblivians who drive in the left lane on the highway and won't move to the right even when there are 10 cars lined up behind them flashing their lights.

I think it depends on the lake. Where I am the nearest lake is about 2 square miles of water. And due to how busy the oilfield was this summer so many people bought boats. Mostly bu's around here, Im proud to say Im the first with a Nautique. But in the summer I have counted around 25 - 30 boats. It sucks there isn't calm water anywhere no matter what. I feel for the guy in the canoe lol.

The only problems I have on my lake are the fisherman who seine for fish, leaving lines and floating milk jugs all over the place. But that's what scissors are for.

Here there is plenty of water for tubers, skiers, boarders, etc. Becasue the lake is made up of long "fingers" of water there is always somewhere sheltered and relatively flat......but the true glass is hard to find and you have to go way back up towards the forest sometimes to find it. That water is the propery of the footers.

This type of conversations always make me laugh. They always end up in arguments with no resolution because their is no resolution.

My take on the question is similiar to Chexi -- Nobody owns the water but the first one there has dibs. If we are out on the water boarding and the only spot I can find is at the slalom course and nobody is there I'm going to claim use and have fun boarding.

Go ahead with your arguments, they won't change my mind. I'm respectful on the water and that is what everyone else should be. Nobody owns the public space.

                    AMEN SocBum!!!

It's all a matter of being respectful of the others on the water. It's too bad there are so many people who own boats and PWC that just have no concept of courtesy because no one has taught them and/or they simply don't have enough common sense to respect the others on the water.

There should be a course all new boaters have to take prior to being able to take ownership of a boat or PWC. Make it a weekend course that covers safety, launching, boating basics, knowing your surroundings, respecting the water and others on it, etc. Some are better drivers than others, but no one should be simply "handed the keys" because they have money to buy a boat or PWC. Just like having a drivers license is a priviledge, so is boating. Dealerships should incorporate the cost into the cost of the boat and if someone buys from a private seller, it's part of their first year registration fee and they will not be provided the registration until the course is complete. Once the course has been taken, it never has to be taken again...unless someone gets a DUI on the water.

Sorry for the diatribe...I experience way too many morons throughout the summer, as I'm sure you all do as well.

Common sense is something that cannot be achieved through a course!

I couldn't agree more, but basic boating skills, which many lack, could be taught.

There are dumb people all over the place, but it seems like at least 50% of them own a boat or a PWC and have no idea what they're doing with them. They need educating before they kill someone!

I had a guy on a PWC almost run over my rider after my rider fell. We chased him down and he told us it was his first time on the PWC. Had he been taught about safe distances, paying attention to his surroundings, etc, it never would have happened...at least I hope it wouldn't have happened.

that's the danger of PWC's. You generally don't give your keys to the boat to someone and say go have fun without some instruction, but that's just what is happening. You also wouldn't let just anyone ride your motorcycle, either.
