Ski Nautique 2001?

Hey guys/gals first post here...I've recently been thinking about downsizing my boat. I currently own a 2000 Moomba Mobius V and have been really happy with it but due to getting ready to build a house and start a family soon I think I need to downsize the boat for a few years. I've always liked the SN 2001s and they seem like a great boat for the money. I know I'd be losing a lot of room and storage space with a 2001 but that doesn't really bother me.

I know they throw a great wakeboarding wake but what about surfing behind one? I've read that '89 is the best year because of the silent muffler, reduction gear tranny, and AME epoxy resin; but would a well cared for older one ('87, '88) be alright? Oh, and where do you get the flight control tower to fit a 2001? Any feedback/opinions are helpful, thanks!

bb - I have a '89 2001 & am very satisfied with the wake for surfing. We use a couple of fatsacks, one on center at rear, one at side of engine. We have found the starboard side to have a better curl, must be due to driver weight or prop rotation or both. You won't be sorry trading up from a Moomba to a CC - size doesn't matter, it's the performance that counts!

I had an 83 2001 for over 9 years. The newer ones definately have a neater interior that can be more plush but performance wise you cant go wrong with any year. The acme 542 prop takes care of any ballast you can put in it. I had an Airboom tower on mine but that is before New Dimension was in business.

They sound like great boats...What are the main things to look for/ask about when talking to a 2001 seller? I know the stringers and soft spots in the floor are a main concern.

Thanks for the information...I just got a deposit on my boat today so it will probably be another 30 days or so before I can get real serious into my search for a 2001. I live in Kansas so finding one won't be easy, the midwest seems to be a dry area for Nautiques .

if you end up with one needing work, there are some AWESOME interiors out there on some of those old 2001s.
we used to have a 1983 2001. the thing was a total piece of crap by the time we got it, but what a great time! i used to spend hours looking for ideas on how to redo the interior myself. we ended up trading it in on a 2002 sante so i never ended up doing anything with it, but i saw some incredible old 2001s. they always reminded me of people with old cars who restore them into better condition than when they were new.

I would look for an 89. I have owned three of them, and in my opinion they have an edge over other years due to the the PCM Power plus tranny (1.23:1).
I just cleaned up and re-did a blue and grey 89, and am going to sell it. Kind of a lil hobby of mine.
You can get a good deal on some of the older Nautiques now though.
82-89 used the same hull, and it is great for board sports.

I have an 89 model and it throws a great wake, my friend has an 85 and the 89 surfs much better than his.

Yeah, I've been leaning towards an '89 for a number of reasons...interior and vinyl seems nicer, power plus tranny, AME epoxy resin, and the silent muffler.

I really like the 82-84 models because they have painted on graphics. It is so easy to customize one as most of hte other colors from the 85-89 are not the best. Here is a pic of mine with a custom black stripe.
