Spring Project 2002 SANTE with cracked block

This is my new project for the spring. I purchased a 02 SANTE from an auction with a cracked block, cracked intake manifold, and cracked exhaust manifolds. Here are some photos of what a cracked block and what milky oil looks like. I want to thank all of you who have posted your projects on this site, with photos. It has made me a lot more comfortable removing all the seats and side panels for a good cleaning while I have the engine out being rebuilt.

good luck with the rebuild. So your pretty much taking it farther than any of us now that you have ripped the engine out. While it's out, I would do a really good cleaning on everything down there and replace any of the water hoses, valves, pumps, etc. Any pics of the rest of the boat?

Great time to replace your rudder packing, and give the steering cable a good look. Where are you? If this was ever a salt boat, do the cable for certain.

          Rudder packing

How do you replace your rudder packing? There is no way to grease it. The boat only has 350 hours on it. Anything else you can think of replacing. I used Super Clean to clean the inside bilge area. I am not ready to replace the ballast system yet. The new engine is costly.

Now would be a good time to do ballast work if you're planning on adding rear ballast. The stock ballast system on the 03/04 have the intake just foreward of the tranny and the ballast valves are just under the tranny and pumps rear of the engine on the port side. It's a rear pita to change the valves or to get the plumbing in there after the engines is back in there.

If I remember correctly from other posts, you pulled out a GT40, right? Are you going with a new GT40 or trying something else. What is this costing you? Also, did you ever find a steering wheel? Good luck!

                Sante Block

I have heard nothing but good things about the GT-40, so I am staying with the same. The rebuild will cost just over $5,000 with tax. $1,800 for the long block, 1,200 for the removal and install plus testing, $400 for the block core charge,$200 for a intake manifold, $250 for balancing, $350 for porting of the heads, and then misc parts.

THE MORALE OF THE STORY IS WINTERIZE, IT CAN SAVE YOU THOUSANDS !!!

Kevfran hooked me up with a steering wheel and the hunt still continues for a shifter knob. I tried the local dealer and the knob are really spendy. I will try the local parts house or turn my own.

The moral of the story might be "winterize" but from what I can tell, if these people didn't forget to winterize you probably wouldn't have a boat, or at least wouldn't have got a boat with such a deep discount.
Anyway, keep us updated with pics, this is one heck of a project.

                  good luck

                    RE: Sante Block

Rudder packing is easy. Get the correct size Goretex packing from West or SkiDim. Remove the tiller arm. Put a block about half an inch under your rudder so it doesn't make this big CLANG on the ground when you pull this apart. Open up the nut on top of the rudder gland. Use a pick to get the old stuff out. Count how many rings come out. Cut the same amount (3-4) of rings. These need to be wrapped around the shaft and cut because the ends need to meet after making a circle. meaning it is not a straight cut. Stagger the joints 120* from each other as you put them back in the nut. Tighten snug, and water test. Adjust as needed. The Goretex is "virtually" dripless. These needs to drip occasionally for lubrication.

You may not really need to do this at 350 hours but it is right there and exposed, and super easy.

These guys are right about the ballast system too. Out with the old and in with the new. You have everything out and open right now. Working on V-drives just isn't that fun with the motor in the way.

But what? The comment that followed that was just silly to even say.

Rudder packing change probably not needed.

I doubt you need to change the rudder packing at 300 hours. My 1997 Ski Nautique, with 1975 hours still has the original rudder packing in it. I have dropped the rudder a few times, and regreased the rudder shaft, and port, but I cannot recall ever having to even tighten the packing nut on the rudder, let alone replace the rudder packing. Maybe the grease I put in there seals it up. In any case, I would tighten the packing nut before I would just change out the packing material, just because it is easier to get to.
I have spent a lot of time tracking down a water leak that turned out to be in the bottom of the muffler, and while doing that, I did spend a lot of time looking at the rudder port for leaks.
The grease I used was from Mercury Marine, in a 10 oz tube, 2-4-C grease.
