I don't think there is a practical way to "dissapate" wakes before they hit something (the shoreline). A wake is nothing more than a wave of energy traveling through a medium (water), much like a sound wave travels through air. Unless there is something to absorb that energy, the wave will continue until on forever (theoretically), like the ocean wave example someone mentioned earlier. On lakes these things that absorb the wave energy are shorelines, grasses on the shoreline, your sandy beach, submerged trees, etc etc.
Generally, I know the skill level of each one of the people that rides on my boat, if they don't benefit from ballast, or can barely get wake to wake, we just don't use ballast, there is no point. I'm certainly not an expert rider, but I enjoy hitting a loaded wake at 85ft and sailing a huge grab, 180, backroll or other common trick. I think a huge stalled out simple trick with style looks better than a very technical trick that is rushed, thats just my opinion...maybe that's just because I can't do the really tech tricks!
