    Lifter tick in 07 210..ideas?

    Hey everyone,
Went out the other day and noticed that one of the lifters is ticking. I know this isnt a serious problem, and usualy go away over time. Do any of you use any oil treatment? If so which one do you use? If this keeps up I will have the dealer take a look at it.

    thanks

hyp3rlite, are you sure it is a lifter ticking? My '03 Excalibur sounds like the liters are making noise, but it's really the fuel injectors cycling. They sound a lot like a lifter that has pumped down. Sorry for the dumb question, but I don't know your experience with engines and have limited info to work with.

It might also be a small exhaust leak too. I've heard cars with small header leaks that I swear would be valve train noise only to find an exhaust leak. Just a few suggestions to look for.

Is the oil full and in good condition ? I just replaced an intake gasket on a 4.3 L because the antifreeze
leaked into the oil. The owner only complained about the lifter noise [ because of contaminated oil].

ok thanks for the heads up. Im very positive, and got a few opinions from people on the boat that its a lifter. I just changed the oil out 5hrs ago, total there is about 80hrs on the boat, so in a perfect world nothing should be going wrong yet. What oil do you guys run? I decided to run castrol gtx 20w-50 this time, after talking to a mechanic at correct craft dealer. I might swing by auto zone and get some oil treatment before i head out later, just wanted to see what kind others have used in the past. thanks again

Oil treatment in a new motor will not help it any. If its really a lifter making noise it has collapsed. No treatment for that. If it was an old motor that might have a clogged lifter then oil treatment might work. Save your money on the snake oil. There has to be a mechanical reason for it to fail. What kind of oil were you using before you changed it. Why go with 20w50? Seems awfully thick for a new boat.

When you check the oil does it have any white or milky color in it that is an indication of water in the oil.
It wont matter if you only got 5 hours on it if you have a internal water leak.

I agree, I thought I had a lifter ticking, purchase a lifter and push rod but when I removed the exhaust manifold found exhaust leak. Sounds just like a lifter. I had a friend that had the exact same issue and it too was just a bad exhaust manifold gasket. No big deal to fix.

I have very limited mechanical knowledge, but 2 weeks ago my 08 210 started sounding like a 1975 VW bug under the hatch. Having owned older boats previously it sounded like an exhaust/manifold leak to me. Called the dealer and as it turns out it was the exhaust manifold gasket that was bad. Boat only has 120 hrs on it and it was covered under PCM warranty.

Should be covered by warranty, take it to the dealer and let them guess and fix it.
