SAN 220 - The Red Headed Step Child?

    Hey Guys

It seems that the 220 has not really been adopted by the wakeboard community, it has been left for the family first wakeboard second minded boater. Just curious as to why that is, or at least why there is that perception. How is the wake performance vs. the 210 and 230 for wakeboarding and surfing. And for me personally, as I begin my preliminary shopping and research for an upgrade to an '05 or '06 model how do the 210 and 220 compare for its first couple years on the market.

I have an 07 220 TE after having a 95 super sport and a 05 211. The 220 has way more space in side than then old 210, 211, and even the new 210, and i have heard it is a better layout than 230. The bow area is very small and in the rear the aft storage areas on each side of the engine are hatched out to give it a very large usable cabin area. The garbage can never seemed like that great of an idea until i owned it for a while, i would actually keep this boat for that feature only.

For surfing the 220 is great, you can technically surf it with the stock ballast, and you can add as much weight as you want and it keeps getting better. The high freeboard in the back allows it to handle all this weight without having water splash in. For wakeboarding it creates a huge wake, i think this is due to the deep V of the hull and the fact you can put a lot of weight in it and it handles it well. I have never had water splash over the back when stopping when it is extremely weighted, where I ride in some friends vlx's and wieghted the same you have to be careful stopping too fast. That being said the major issue with the 220 is the fact that it is very very susceptible to side to side weighting. It is hard to balance it and when it is good on one side it will be washed on the other. I have heard putting most of the weight in the front fixes this, although i have not tried it. I have learned how to weight it just right and I have two golden retrievers to move around on command to keep it just right.

Would i buy the 220 again if i had a choice? Hmm, i really like the interior and the hidden garbage can feature, but it would be nice to have a boat that was not so finicky to side to side weighting. I would probably ride around in a new 210 to see if i could handle the smaller interior, and then go with that if it was acceptable, but for now the 220 is good enough for what i use it for.

i love my 220 for the room and storage just like the guy said above-----

i had some guys ride with me this weekend that absolutly loved the wake and tore it up!! one of the guys told me that there is no way that any "out of the box" wake is good---he sincerely appoligized after his first pull--no rookie either--he has 7 inverts, s-spins and hoochies in his bag!

the hidden trash can is the best feature!!!

i love my 220 coming out of the old school 210----skeptical people should drive, ride and hangout in one before they say bad things

As the others said the 220 has a great interior with plenty of room and the bin is one of the most under rated options ever. It's incredibly handy. One bad thing about the interior is that the cushions can be a bit too tight so it takes a bit of effort to get in to the enormous storage areas.

Definately the twitchy wake is the boats major (possibly only)downfall. We had a few old shape 210's then a 220 and now a couple of the new 210's and a day in the new 210 is far more relaxing as you dont have to constantly think about the wake and side to side weighting. The 220 has quite a good wake with stock balast and if you dont run much more than that you wont have as much to worry about so it kind of depends on how heavily you load your boat.

What speeds are you guys running? I heard that if you ride 23mph and up not as washy. I think they are one of the best looking boats on the lake. My wife really likes the layout of the boat. If moneys was not issue I would get the 230, that wake if HUGE!

Very true statement about the speed. We used to run 22.7 in our old shape 210's and found that if you ran up near 24 in the 220 the washing wake problem was not as much of a problem. At the time we were too used to 22.7 and found it a bit of a jump up to 24ish.

We just sold our 09 210 and it will be a while till we get our new one so will probably get out a bit in a mates 220. We tend to ride a touch quicker now so my opinion may change a bit?

i run factory ballast only, i have all my gear stored evenly, i move the seat to center of boat and passngers keep the boat level----my wake is clean from 21.5 and up......23 seems to be the speed for the "good riders" which im not!!

I love my 220. Mine is a read head, orange as all get out! I love that it still has that ski boat look even though it is bigger. The dash layout still has that Nautique look that we have all grown used to. Unfortunatlly it will be the last model with that lay out, get used to the flat and square dash. The storage is the best and the layout is the best, in my opinion. Only thing the 210 and 230 have going is the flat back bench, which you gain a little room.

Now for the wake. I run over 3500 pounds. I have plumbed in two large bags in the back, one each side. A custom sack that lays over the gas tank. A arrow sack in the bow, as well as the under the seat triangle in the bow. We started without the triangle sack and only the arrow, but we had alot of porposing. Zero Off is also a problem with that (well see what there gonna do). The triangle sack added 500 pounds to the bow and help out ALOT! So as you can tell we run alot of weight every time we ride.

The surf wake is one of the best! You can surf it right out of the box, and you cant over weight it, it just gets bigger and longer the more weight you add. The wakeboard wake is awesome, but you have to be very aware of the people in the boat. THIS BOAT IS VERY PICKY!!! The more weight the pickier it gets. My 3 year old runs around like a monkey and he keeps us on our toes getting it balanced out.

I ride with a very core group of guys. They rode the 220 for two years and loved it, they now ride the 230. This is do to the fact they get a free boat every year (tough huh)! My one buddy would rather ride behind my 220 than any other boat, and you can see it when he rides. My friend rides on tour, and he had no problem shredding the nar behind his two 220s.

We work everyday on something to work out the side balance thing, well come up with something soon!!!!!

For the balance issue, just pick up an 75-100 lb dumbell from a gym or sports store. You can even pad it with gator grip to avoid messing up carpet. They work great for shifting just enough weight to get it perfect.

Thanks  We've been doing promo work for Nautique in Australia for some time and had the opportunity to own some fantastic boats.

the 220 should be redesigned or stripped from the SAN series....the boat may have great size and storage, but no $70k "wake" boat should have balancing issues this bad. I know a lot of guys who own SANs, and we all have new 210s and 230s. I highly recommend the 210 for ease of weighting and killer wake. The 210s hull is by far the least sensitive to weight distribution of all the SANs. 230s are roomier and can be massive with 5k pounds added.

Thus, i think the "red headed step child" or "black sheep" or"3rd wheel" or even the "humpback whale" are great nicknames for this boat.

plumb extra sacks. empty port / fill starboard or fill port / empty starboard to balance. takes about 5 second and you dont have to be a weight nazi. or you could just disregard the closest wake that you will find to a legacy 210 on the market.

or keep a 50lb weight on the floor by the driver. move it a few inches and it fixes everything.

We have a lot of fun on my 220 and when we had it weighted with a full tank of gas, and 10 people, the 17 year old we pulled last weekend couldn't take the wake it was so big!

We use the boat mainly for surfing, skiing doubles or triples, tubing, etc..

Got to ride in and drive a 220 this weekend. Nice boat. Loved the layout, handling, etc. After a few rides we got a good surf wake figured out without much additional weight. my wife loved the size and layout as well.
Ain't no 210, but definitely a nice ride.
