Which side to surf from port or starboard

We just bought an 06 226 TE and are trying to surf. We have been struggling with weighting and getting the wake to set up. It sounds like you just need to experiment with different settings until you find the right combination. One quick question, which side is it better to surf from? Is it easier on one side than the other? Or does it really matter?

    thanks

RE: Which side to surf from port or starboard

You surf on the side that your front foot is more comfortable. Right foot forward rides starboard (driver) side.
Generally speaking the wake will be slightly better on the side that the prop spins to. LH rotation will be a tad better on the port side. RH on the starboard side.
You need to weight your boat properly. Listing heavily to the side you ride on. You can also use people to do part of this. I am not familiar with your boat so someone else will have to chime in on what is the best set up for that particular ride.

The board plays a pretty important role when you are trying to learn. What board do you have?

That is a good question, the board is a little over 5 feet I think. We went with something not too extreme, but a little more advanced than a true beginner....

a 60+ inch board should be fine for any beginner to intermediate rider to ride.

WakeSlayer, just got back from an incredible weekend. The Family, from the 41 year old dad, to the 7 year old boy, all got to find the sweetspot this weekend. We threw in a 750# fat sac in the walkway, and the 226 created an awesome wake. One thing we noticed, the smooth water made a huge difference, is this consistent with what everyone else has experienced? I was shocked that the smooth water made that much of a difference.

                Hey dude.

I just got back from the CorrectCraftFan reunion in Green Lake, WI. We got to surf a 07 220. Had to figure out the weight on that which took a while. In the end, we used belly and side ballast full. 400lb bag half full in the rear locker, and about 350# on the seat on the riders side. Also taught a new Python SAN owner and crew to surf on this boat. Got to meet Brian Hall (BKHallpass) and his lovely wife and daughter on the Snakeboat.

Glad to hear you got it figured out on yours. You will probably keep tuning it and find a way to make it perfect. It takes a couple good days out to completely sort the wake. Then you will start using a smaller trickier board, and carve your way to a great time.

Congrats on your purchase. For surfn...
I throw 750 in the starboard locker, center stock ballast 1/2 full, and a couple lead feet under a starboard bow seat and the wave is huge and rideable every time. Rough water is a factor, but it can be done. Use your people in the boat to fine tune the wave.....also prolly the most important factors will be your speed and turning radius. We pretty much surf around 11 mph (10.8-11.2) and have none to a slight turning radius into the rider side. The pocket on the 226 is quite a ways back too...sometimes a bit mis leading.

Mike (Wakeslayer) - You forgot to mention that last weekend you spent a half hour trying to teach an 'ole dawg how to surf, but he was just to cold & tired to get it.

Thanks for helping me, it was fun just trying. I now know it's not the board, nor the boat. Only 1 factor left!

You will get it Chris, just gotta keep after it. The weather and conditions were horrible. That takes a lot out of a person.
I just posted on CCFan that I had a difficult time keeping real names, screen names and boats all straight. I did not realize you were SNobsessed, even.

What a great time, it was a pleasure to meet you and your son!!

I thought this is what everyone did when Rough water ruined the day.

I can't stand when you are on a small lake, it's glass and people are surfing.

                        Sorry thread derail.

Wakeslayer and Mrs. Wakeslayer are very gracious and patient instructors. It was clear to me they have been around the block a few times in terms of wakesurfing and have taught a lot of beginners. Thanks for the tips. End of thread jack. BKH

                            Brief re-jack.

Thank you for the compliment Brian. It was a gas hanging out with you guys Sunday, we are glad we stayed and got to slash a few waves with you and your lovely family.

Bimmer, that's kind of a short-sighted perspective. i will respectfully decline to comment further as I have said it all before.
