diff between 2001 ski nautique and 2002 ski nautique

Hi everyone, I'm new to your forum and in the market to buy a used ski nautique. I'm looking at a 2001 ski with 185hrs and a 2002 ski with 110hrs. the 01 has a single axle trailer, the 02 a dual axle. Both have gt-40 motors. There is a $5,500 diff between the two. Is the 02 worth that much more? I have read an archive brochure that said the 02 has 11% more room inside. Is this that noticeable? I'm only using the boat for family recreation(skiing, kneeboarding, tubing). Thanks for any response, jamie

Depends what type of skiing you're doing. The 02 has a slightly better slalom wake, but a worse trick wake. There should not be that big a difference in price, for sure. Other than that there are a couple interior differences, etc. I'd buy whichever boat is in the best condition if you're not a trick skier.

Dual axle is worth a bit more. Actually the 2001 will ski better then the 02 IMO. If all is equal in the gel coat and interior go for the 01

I really do like the dual axle trailer since we trailer our boat from diff lakes+river. To get a better idea of the price diff: 01=14,000 02=19,500. I haven't looked at each boat personally yet since both boats are several hours away. Owner of 02 says gel coat and interior are perfect. The 01 owner says one 4inch long pencil width scratch in gel coat and drivers seat has small seam separation in stitching, not torn. Rest of boat is perfect.

Which engine in the 02. If I recall, that was the year that the supply of GT-40's ran out and were substituted with the Chevy 350 excal.

In 02 there were only a few, I think less than 50 that were fitted with the gt-40 motor and his was one of them.

look at the condition of the engine. Corosion and build up would be an indicator of neglect. gel coat can be fixed easy.

Both boats had the Teleflex digital gauges. The hours may not be accurate. Confirm by service records, if possible.
I believe the 2002 got the extra room by making the width of the gunnels smaller, but on the 2001 (model year) it might be possible to tuck your wakeboard up under the gunnel, leaving more actual room on the floor of the boat.
I consider a single axle trailer an advantage. It is lighter, easier to move around, and has two less tires to replace. The Ski Nautique is a light enough boat not to need dual axles in my opinion.
Go for a test ride, and ski behind each boat, and drive each boat.
Take each boat for a test tow behind your tow vehicle, also.
After you do both, ot will probably be obvious which boat you want.

I have an 01, for the price difference all things equal I would go with the 01. It's a solid boat as is I'm sure the 02 but the price difference does it for me.

Thanks for all your advice. I can't wait to see the boats in person. As a checkmate owner I'm extremely honest about describing the condition of my boat. I'm sure most correct craft owners are too. I hope these boats are as clean as they sound. I've been wanting a correct craft boat for years. thanks again

forgot to ask: how did they incorporate the rear ski locker/sun pad on the 2002? Was the rest of the layout changed for this?

J I would go for the boat with a tandem trailer unless you need the single to move around inside a tight garage. I personally would never have a boat larger that a 18.5 footer on a single axle. just for the fact if your trailer has a blowout you have a better chance of keeping it on the road I know when we go camping for a weekend we load the boat up with sleeping bags and camping stuff for the trip out It is easy to max out a single with full take of petro, colers extra gas, ect.

That 5K swing in these times you sould be able to cut that in half before you realy play hardball depending on the situation.
