2300 hrs do I need to worry?

My 1996 196 has done just over 2300 hours. All seems well.Starts first time pulls well and fairly economical on fuel.

Steering is a bit loose but thats a bout it.Steering will be fixed over winter .Do I need to start thinking of some planned maintance or just keep on skiing and doing the normal things till something major happens ?

Do a search under "overhaul and hours". Some members specify an overhaul between 2,000 and 2,500 hours while others mention 3,000 hours. I think the hours referenced were based on certain model engine.

Here is one of the links: http://www.planetnautique.com/index....overhaul+hours

Keep using it but order a new 200 to keep in the shed as a spare. You never know when you might need it.

I only have 2186.1 on my 1997 Ski Nautique.
Repair the steering. Do normal things.

My thoughts is use as usual. You dont rebuild a car engine at any certian mileage, why should your boat. If it started burning an obscene amount of oil, knocking from bearing failure, running like crap because of low comprezsion, Than fix it. But if it aint broke, dont.

As TRDon said, don't do anything to it. If you follow a good maintenance schedule, that Ford small block in your 96 will be fine. Do a compression check when you change the oil. All cylinders should be within 10 percent. As long as the compression is balanced, there's no knocking, good oil pressure, and no smoking on startup or idle, then all is good.

PCM recommends between 2000 and 2400 hours. That being said I also say if it isn't broke don't fix it. A compression check will tell you where you stand. If there is more thsan a 10% difference or they are all below 100. It's time for a rebuild. It should run about 2-3K.
