At slow speeds when shifting from forward or reverse into neutral, a knock had developed in what sounded like the transmission of my 206. So last week I made an appointment for yesterday with the local marina where they work on PCM. Friday night I checked out the PN "Maintenance & Technical Questions" section and found the "Noise When Backing Up" thread. In the thread east_texas_skier wrote this: "Check your prop nut to see that it is secure. If it loosens a bit then, in reverse, the prop will rattle around. When going forward, the prop is reacting to the rearward force it's putting out and is pushed up against the shaft so that it doesn't rattle, which is why you wouldn't hear it then. I don't know if this is your problem, but this is exactly what happened to me on my old boat with a nylock nut when it loosened (and I did have a cotter pin installed)."
After reading this I got up and walked outside to the garage where the boat is and sure enough the nut had backed off some. I tightened it up and Saturday when we took the boat out, the knock was gone. Obviously this saved me a trip to the marina and probably some cash as well.
THANKS SO MUCH to east_texas_skier and those who run the PlanetNautique.com site!
