Help! Which boat to test this weekend '05 226 or '08 210?

I need to drive 2 1/2 hours south or north to test two different boats on Saturday. I can only do one.

The first is a one owner '05 226, TE with 170 hours. No upgraded stereo, no bimini, no snap or storage covers. $37,500. I like the idea of this boat but I'm told the wake for surfing and wakeboarding isn't anywhere close to '07 and higher 210, and forget ever skiing behind it. (do later models have a different hull and hydro gate and does it make a difference?)

The second is an '08 210 Standard Edition. This doesn't have keyless start, digital dash, depth, any of that stuff (except it does have Zero Off). Has tower, two spinners, ballast. It was a ski school boat in Sacramento that is now at a dealer. Dealer has replaced all the vinyl, carpet is basically new (it was taken out during the ski school months), are fixing a couple of gel coat issues. Supposedly well maintained with oil change every 30 hours, tranny service at 75, etc. But this boat has 700 hours! No bimini, storage covers, blingy stereo (just basic clarion head unit), but does have a heater which is important to my wife. Dealer asking $39,900 and including a $1500 credit (to upgrade the stereo, buy covers, whatever). This seems high for a standard edition with 700 hours, but it's the closest 210 for me to try.

I'm concerned about resale on the 210 with the hours and the lack of a blingy dash ( a couple of dealers have told me that everyone wants the team edition, they'll order one standard edition, just to have it, and even though it's $7000 less, they'll still have a hard time selling it.

On the 226 I'm concerned that I'm settling for a boat that doesn't have the wake or flexibility I might want (even though I don't plan to ski, but who knows, in a couple of years I might wish I had the option for an open water pull)

On either boat, I'd like to go to test them with the potential of negotiating a deal that would make me feel good about buying it and bringing it home.

Am I wasting my time on both of them? Should I just keep looking or at least take advantage of an opportunity to board and surf behind at least one of them? If so, which one should i pursue? I have a family of 6, so that also makes the 226 intriguing.

Sorry for the long post, but would appreciate other's insights with more Nautique experience than me.

I think the 210 is the better choice. The standard dash is more reliable, the vinyl is new, and with regular use and maintenance, the engine is probably in better shape.
If you are looking for an investment vehicle, buy stock.
If you are looking for something to buy to spend time with your wife, and kids, get a boat.
If price is a concern, shop around. You are about a month away from the prime boat buying season.

I'd go for the 210 for sure.

My experience is much less with nautiques and much more with offshore boats. That said, Daniel is right. Wait a month! Because summer will be over, and everyone who has to pay for storage knows they have 7 months of costs ahead, not to mention winterizing, and all other associated misc expenses. Unless you just HAVE to have one by labor day, I bet if you wait, a better deal will come along. Boats have been sitting on the market longer and longer, ask me how I know. I have a 34 yellowfin that I've been trying to sell and cant for what would have been a steal 2 years ago before the economy flipped.

Patience in this game is a virtue, wait and you'll find what you're after.

210 as the 226 was a let down on the wake to me. It was very mellow as compared to a 210.

            Very good points.

Personally I'm fine with the standard dash, although I do like quick control for muting music, whether an accessory switch or mute button, I find it handy on a boat.

I don't view depreciating assets as an investment, only a cost. That said, I've never spent $40k on any vehicle, I expect to keep whatever I buy a long time, but I'm also want to know I'm getting a great deal and that I wouldn't lose a ton of money if my situation changed and I needed to sell for some reason.

I'm going out on other people's boats right now, just bought some end of year clearance boards and surf board for me, my son and my wife. We are loving finally having our own gear, dialed to us. But going out with other people for hard core sessions precludes being able to take my whole family. So I'd love to have a boat now.

I realize waiting till after labor day would be best, but back to my last point, I'm really having fun right now and would like to share it with my family. I'd love to steal the last month of the season on my own boat, bought at a good deal for the current market.

I don't know if having my cake, and eating it too, is a realistic expectation. Does the 210 I mention seem like a fair deal? I'm not finding many around in the whole country.

it's really hard for me to tell what a good deal is right now. All i can really see online is what people are selling boats for, but I haven't figured out how to determine what's actually selling and at what price. I've called dealers around the country to try and gain regional perspective and it just leaves me confused.

Finally, I want to spend $40k or less. This is the only '08 210 I've found for under that mark, but by the time I add stuff I'd want/need, it's a lot more than $40K, plus tax title and license. I haven't expected to be able to buy an '08, I was really just looking for an '07, even though we like the new deck on the '08 much more.

On the 700 hours, once again, opinions vary, for my own use, I'm not that concerned, but anyone I talk to about this boat has a range of perspectives from "run away" to "no big deal" some are mechanics, some are dealers, some are reps, some are just friends with more boat experience than me. I find having to tell a story about a boat is tedious and annoying, it's a pain trying to justify why a boat has so many hours, once again, not a big deal I guess, unless you find yourself needing to sell it.

The "sacramento.craigslist" boat is also listed on PN. Here is the link. Looks like a nice boat. Well taken care of.

I agree, that boat may be a little older however it sure looks like the guy takes care of it. One thing you might want to ask is for a picture of the dash.

210 for sure. you can do everything with that boat, plus fit it in the garage at the end of the day.

I've read a lot of good stuff on this site.

But this statement is probably the best declaration I've seen in the several thousand posts I've read.

I'm always criticized by family, friends, and neighbors about how long I'll think about something when I should be complemented on the "willpower" I have.

I shopped a "long" time and drove 1050 miles each way to get my 206. Well worth it.
