Rev engine up the boat ramp to get water out, do you do it?

This may be a stupid NewB question, but please bear with me. I watched a guy with a Nautique rev his engine in neutral while his wife pulled the boat up the ramp on the trailer. I have owned a boat (not nautique up till now) for many years and have never done this as I thought it was bad to run it out of the water for more than a few seconds. I am guessing he did this to get the water out of the engine. I have never had a problem not doing this.....

What are your thoughts on this?

His water pump impeller will soon go bad.

I have seen wave runners do this . I cant see what it accomplishes outer than making a lot of noise. Running on the ramp will not drain water out of the engine. You should never run your Nauti without a water supply.

I keep mine throttled up when pulling out just to make sure I don't slide back on the trailer..... Once the hull leaves the water though, I shut it down.

DanC is right. Once the boat is on the trailer with the bow strap hooked up the the bow eye, our engine is turned off.

Unrelated to OP: Our parks department asks that folks do not rev the engine at the ramp becasue they claim it causes the gravel underwater to pile up away from the ramp.

Power loading washes out the bottom of the ramp. It is not allowed at most ramps I use. It also causes extreme wear on the bunk carpet

I personally don't do it but have once. We unloaded in the TN rive about 9am and didn't get back until about 9pm. The river level had dropped about a foot in that time for some reason so all the tire on the truck where sitting in green slime. Once we loaded I just used the boat to put the truck some until the front tire could start pulling.... Then cut it off before about half the boat was out of the water.

I've only ever seen this done in gear to help the car up the ramp and get the nose of the boat positioned correctly against the stop once it starts to settle on the bunks. I've NEVER done it though.

I personally don't "rev" the motor however, i do usually shut it off about 1-2 seconds after the boat clears the water. Have done that for years without any issues. Just helps clear out any dirty water, etc. that you tend to pick up near the launch area since it can sometimes be a few days before I get to flushing out the boat. Generally, as others have stated, it's a bad idea to run the boat at any RPM without an active water flow.
