    Wakesurf Behind 196 or 176

I have seen alot of post about how to weight different boats for wakesurfing but I haven't seen anything on a 196 or 176. I was told that it was possible but wanted to hear from those that have tried and hopefully succeeded.

In addition, you are going to need a big long floaty board to ride decently.

My kids do it off my 98 with a fat sac on the floor between the motorbox and rear seat. Works for them but they only weigh <65lbs. For me I rather take them surfin then tubing!

My girlfriends 7 year old just started standing up on the board while holding onto rope. Pretty neat to watch her learn. I have tried with 2 small fat sacks, one port back, one port side but it didn't make it big enough. I'm just wondering if it is possible to make a wake large enough for an adult to ride.

I'm sure it can be done, we surfed a 197 this summer with a 750 in the rear and another alongside the motor on the port side. For weight in front of the engine we just had a driver and spotter.

We needed to slow down and turn just before the wave hit the back of the boat when the rider fell to avoid taking water over the transom. I taped off the port side blower vent (i know, i know) to avoid taking water in there as well.

I never surfed my Ski Tique but I remember that it was really easy to overload the back end which goofed up the wake. My guess is that 500 lbs in the back and another 550 or so on the side would have done the trick.
Sold my boat to buy a house, the house is much less fun.

I appreciate the advise. Weather permitting I will be out Saturday trying. If anyone else has suggestions please post.

750 behind motor cheating to the driver side (cleaner wake from prop rotation) 3 x 100lb sacks, 1 back corner 1 middle back bench one in front of the back corner. I have the liquid force 5'6" board which is a good starter board. Tried the hyperlite 5'6" but the nose comes down to more of a point so it nosed into the water more easily.

Driving: when rider falls put the boat in neutral and it will naturally turn away from the weight. A little reverse to stay centered in your original wake drive back slow to rider. You will fill you boat with water either over the front or the side if you try to drive back quickly to the rider.

Also Get a surf rope so the riders arms don't get caught in the handle when they fall.

two more thoughts before you head out...

if you have decent weight in the boat people incl. and the wake is really washed out find deeper water... I'm sure you've read about this on other posts but i was amazed at how much of a difference is makes.

also for speed mine are fully adjustable (Seem accurate but have never checked) 11.5mph seems to be the right speed on my boat.... faster than most others i know with bigger boats. I have a gt-40 2100 rpm is usually pretty close sometime with more weight and people it's closer to 2300rpm.

I don't know how this will translate to your boat being a little shorter. Should be close though

                    hopefully this helps!

Well we got out there on Sunday and had success! 400# in back, cheating towards port side, 400# along port side, 100# in bow/under observer seat, 100# in front of engine box, 35# child in observer seat, and 200# driver! I tried different speeds and ended up at 15mph gave the surfable wave. Anything less and it was washed out or too close to boat. My girlfriend was able to surf but it wasn't big enough for me. I guess I will have to save my pennies and step up to a 210 in the next couple of years! I appreciate all the advice. I love the information that flows freely on this site!

                        Sounds like you're hooked!

I think your problem was the weight in front of the motor box..... it all has to be behind and to the surf side. when I drive i will sit on the edge of the boat and even this helps... Try getting some people ballast it's the quickest way to learn the weighting.

Our bilge outlet is under the water when our wake is really surfable a a guideline... back deck roughly 4 - 6" below the water.

I am mentally saving for a bigger boat as well. Started in August hope to pull the trigger in 18 - 24 months

sorry just read another post... (over looked the port side being left side) it will never be clean do to prop rotation. I am regular but surf heelside all the time because of this. still try the weight further back as well.

I can't believe others haven't slammed me for surfing a SN!

It's fun that is the point of it all.

I have saved another $ since my last post

That might work better for me because my girl can surf either foot forward but prefers right foot forward. She will be happy about that. We have the hyperlite 5'6" so maybe a different board is in order for me to let go of rope. I agree with you that it is all about the fun.

I have a 2006 196 and we surf port and starboard sides, no problem. We use 2 650lb Sumo sacks placed on either side of the motor box in front of the back seat. We just got the new Ronix wakesurf shaper and it works as advertised. 10.2 mph produces a nice wave and while not huge, is a very surfable wave. We used to have a SA230 so I know what a huge wave looks like.
