    Lead Shot???

Been thinking of getting lead shot to weight out the bow of my boat. The bow compartments in my 90 Sport are pretty small and useless for anything but dock lines. I'm thinking this could be a great way to weight it out, but I'm having trouble thinking of a good way to bag it. I'm thinking garbage bags won't be strong enough. Any ideas would be great, plus anyone with experience using this stuff any tips you picked up along the way would be helpful.

Definitely a good idea. Have been thinking about them but I may be able t get the lead shot cheaper. Once you figure in buying bags and the fact that pop products pricing includes delivery (I think) it may be a wash.

Kevin - Borrow your wife's purse to put the lead shot in. It has a lifting strap built in! She won't mind ... much!

I have been looking at them as well. I did notice that the Pop bags are steel instead of lead.

Just remember you will be negating the positive foam flotation in your boat.

I use lead shot. I have it in 1 gallon orange juice jugs. It makes them easy to move around, keeps the water out, and lead dust in. I swiped it from my father about 12-13 years ago. He reloads, and is planning on reloading a lifetime supply in the next year or two, so he will want to take it back. I am not sure if I will just replace it for him or move to POP bags. Either way it is pretty expensive.

lead shot around here runs about $40 per 25 lbs. We put 50lbs up in the nose of all of our slalom boats. It does make a HUGE difference on the tracking on the Mastercrafts, Malibus, and 206, and not such a big difference on the 196. On the open bow boats, though, we don't use shot. We use 10lb barbell plates as they'll fit in the different compartments up front without issue and are a lot cheaper.

I have 50lb bags filled with lead shot in my SAN. They are made by a buddy of mine here in SoCal. The name of the company is Lead Wake. Real nice bags and I find they are easier to move around and are better constructed than the Pop Bags I have.

If you are interested shoot me a PM and I will send you his info.

I use lead weight in my 08 210. I was on the fence about getting water bags or lead weight but someone sold their boat and I bought it from them. They paid about $250 for 400lbs. I bought it for $125. Each bag weighs 40 lbs. The lead is sealed in a plastic bag then place in a canvas bag with a velcro closure across the top and then a handle that is triple stitched to the side of the bag. If you are interested I can find out where they bought it but my wife and I love it.

Those are the Pop Bags and they use punched steel pellets.

I have some pop bags and they work great. I like that the pop bags are not lead. If not packaged correctly, lead can be harmfull.

We purchased 1 1/2 gallon gas cans (small ones) and went to a couple of tire stores and gathered up used tire weights. Filled two gas cans - 50lbs each. Use them in the bow to assist w/ tracking. The cans are plastic and have handles. Total cost: $14.50 for two of them.

We also got used wheel weights. Put them in 1 gallon zipper plastic bags (20 lbs per bag) then wraped the bags in duct tape. My wife made vinyl bags to put the lead in. she used some old tie down straps to make handles. They work great. I wanted to be able to move them around the boat when for surfing or wakeboarding so the handles and vinyl was important to me. If you aren't planning on moving them around just duct tape 'em.
