we live outside of orlando and are out almost every weekend in our lakes. i would be much more concerned getting bitten by a shark than i would getting bitten by a gator. check out the stats. MANY MANY more shark bites than gator attacks.

in the 9 years that we have been boating in our chain of lakes, i have seen one gator and it was a baby. i know that they are out there, but it just isn't a concern.

i totally know where you are coming from, but that is my 2 cents.

        And what about snakes?

I remember someone saying he had a gun in the boat for the water snakes?
Here in Europe we only have inoffensive water snakes. Two or three weekends ago my wife was in the water waiting for the boat pull and one of these snakes was swimming just in her back, all of us in the boat were laughing of her... I can't imagine this with a water mocassin or a cotton mouth.... UGHHHHH

the snakes are the same thing. i have only seen 2 snakes in the water that have ever given me concern in the 9 years here. but, dude. i think that the snakes are much MUCH scarier than the gators. the snakes are agressive, the gators are not. it gives me the willies just thinking about it!!!!
i would LOVE to live up north where there is nothing in the water that you have to worry about. you can swim as deep as you want (i am sure that the gators are sleeping below, i have no idea where they really are, but i pretend that if i don't go deep, they'll stay asleep. don't ruin it for me!!!) and never have a worry or a care. mmmmmmm

Except for 2 feet of ice 4 months out of the year.

              There are drawbacks to both.

More food for thought. See these nearly every other time I'm out from June through September. Usually stay away but this one didn't drop under until we were within 6 feet or so.
