The Gt-40 is not considered a big block. It is the Ford Windsor 351. After going thru the experience of having one rebuilt this spring for several thousand dollars, I would contact SKIDIM and purchase one of their Chevy "bobtails" that will bolt right up to where the Gt-40 was. The Chevy engine is new, the computer is new and much more accurate at fixing problems. If you have to keep your Gt-40 check with the local engine builders in your area, they can easily rebuild you a new one.
Chances are high that there are no GT40 engines left. In fact, there are probably no new 351 blocks left except aftermarket race blocks which carry a price tag of about $2000. Any good race engine builder would be able to rebuild your current GT40 without issue. If you called Powered by Ford in Orlando, they could probably recommend someone local to you.
I live in Grand Cayman, don't think there are too many people down here that can rebuild these types of engines. If they can it will cost a small fortune. It would be better if i just bought a new engine and pay for the import and duty.
so what type of engine should i buy if I cannot get the original and where from.
I have a 1998 air nautique. Going to be used mainly for wakeboarding.
You're gonna have a really hard time finding new GT40 heads. Those are pretty rock solid, though, and usually don't need much work other than possibly guides and a valve job. Why are you having to replace the engine? What's it doing?
That Excalibur 343 crate engine isn't a bad deal, though.
the boat had been sitting for over 4 yaers not doing anything.
Tried to start found water pump was broken. removed engine did compression test and found left side of engine compression was very low compared to the right. ?? major overheat.
Previous owner said he also had trouble with the electronic fuel injectors etc. Was thinking of carbing the engine. but when I found out about the block problem aswell i though it might just be worth while replacing the whole thing. Unless you guys have any better ideas :-)
thanks again

Labour in Grand cayman is very expensive. cost of new assembly work, rebuild and then to find out electrics screwed might have been worth getting a new engine?
It might be cheaper to get the boat transported to Florida, do the repairs, or replacement there, and then take the boat back to Grand Caymen.
I think you'd be better off to buy a good used boat in Florida and get it shipped to the Caymans. The cost of shipping to and fro would be high, I would think.
It sounds like the best best is to try and do the work yourself. As long as you don't have a cracked block, you might try a rebuild yourself.
You could call Ski and Sports in Tyler Texas at (903) 509-1SKI. I know that they have one that is fresh and ready to go, just not sure if he would part with it or not. They are not easy to find anymore.

I can tell you first hand that I had a GT40 and swapped it out with a new EX343 bobtail which I ordered through SKIDIM.com. Cost was about $8k for the bobtail plus $1,500 for the install. It matched up perfectly with no problem, except I had to remove the dust cover on the 343 to make the hatch close. The PCM EX343 outperforms my old GT40 in all ways - pulling out of the hole, more high end RPMs, better fuel efficiency, higher top end speed.
Cost was about $8k for the bobtail plus $1,500 for the install.
Holy Goat farmers batman, $1500 dollars to remove the old engine and install the new one is a whole lot of money for a very simple procedure. Was something else done with the install?
