Questions About Potential Purchase of a 206

    Hi All,

I'm an Oregonian looking to purchase a 206 and had a few questions about one I'm considering.

The boat I'm looking at was used in salt water, but has a closed loop cooling system. If the hinges, surface metal, ect are in good condition, do I have anything to worry about from the exposure to salt water? Also, are there any hot water shower options that work with the closed loop cooling system?

Finally, a few of the 206's I'm considering are on single axle trailers, but I want a tandem axle. Does anyone know of a fairly economical trailer manufacturer on the west coast?

Thanks in advance for your input!

RE: Questions About Potential Purchase of a 206

First question I'd have is how many hours does it have on the clock? What's the hull condition?

in regards to the saltwater usage, with it having a closed system the engine is going to be fine with the exception of the exhaust manifolds and risers. they will be subjected to the salt and will corroid quickly, so as a safty precaution I would replace them for piece of mind

I heard it cost $3k for a dealer to replace the exhaust manifolds and risers. Not sure how accurate that is.

Thanks all for the feedback! I'll check with my local nautique dealer on the need and cost to replace the manifolds and risers.

The boat has about 200 hours on it and the hull looks like it is in good shape - I'll verify when I have a chance to travel to see the boat. The guy selling the boat used in saltwater said that he took it in on trade and discounted it because of the use in saltwater. Outside of the single axle trailer, lack of hot water shower, and the salt water use, it matches what I want pretty well.

I have some swamp land here in Florida for sale!!!

Changing out Exhaust manifolds and risors is as little as a two hour job on a direct drive. now if it was a salt water boat the bolts can be a bear to extract and may take up more time, other wise two hours $200.00, manifolds and risors $600.00= $800.00 plus tax.

Dont be afraid of a salt water boat, provided it was well taken care of, working here in Panama city I see a lot of salt water ski boats. seems the ones that do not get well taken care of is the v-drives!! OH well more work for me! anyway a fresh water cooled salt water boat the manifolds and risors will need to changed out and the zinks checked and replaed in the heat exchanger.

I already know all the benefits of a tandem axle trailer and, of course, I don't know your trailering needs.

BUT - I've been happy with a single axle under my 206. No, I haven't had a flat on the highway...yet. But did experience that with another single axle trailer so been there, done that. The single alxe handles better, backs better, cheaper to maintain, etc. I bought the boat slightly used but it didn't have a trailer. I ordered a trailer and went back and forth on single vs tandem and painted vs galvanized. I do wish my dealer would have had more trailer smarts and understood my questions about brakes. I got stuck with drum and would have preferred disc. He told me Ramlin didn't offer disc but I'm pretty sure they do.

Thanks again for all of the feedback!

I probably could make due with the single axle, but just really enjoyed the way my dad's Malibu trailered on the tandem versus his previous boat (a Sanger) on the single.

I really need a hot water shower (I like to ski late into the season and the water gets cold in Oregon). Is anyone familiar with the steps involved to remove the closed cooling system?

I wouldn't remove the closed system and it's not that hard to add the shower if you need that option on you boat.

Could you take a little water at a time on its way to the exhaust manifolds and be safe from overheating them?

a closee system is going to give you a hotter shower if you tap into it enstead of the exhaust which is cooled from the lake. with the closed system the temp is going to be more consistant and hotter than what you'll be able to get from the exhaust.

Good question Hollywood. I think the fiberglass pieces and muffler are even more at risk.

bobchris - you might be on to something. Can you upload a sketch of how you would do that? ...for us to review?

I really appreciate your input! I am interested to see how you could setup a hot water shower on the closed system. I was under the impression that you would not be able to add a shower because the closed system uses antifreeze.

there's a heat exchanger for the closed system correct?....otherwise how do you cool the closed system's coolant? it's really not rocket science now is it?
