available engines for 2001 ski nautique

Hi, new to the forum and looking to buy a 2001 ski nautique., The owner is telling me that it has 5.0 pcm. I thought the only engine choice in 2001 was the 5.8gt-40. Can you guys give me any insight on this. I haven't seen the boat in person since its 8hrs away but have seen pics and it does look like 2001 graphics on the hull.

That is the baby engine option. From reading on the forum, I guess it is fine for slalom, however beyond that I think you would be leaving something on the table. If you wakeboard and use any ballast, or barefoot I would seek out the GT-40.

According to my 2001 NSS/SAN owners manual it references 3 engines:

PCM Chevy Apex, 350/5.7 liter, 320 HP
      PCM Ford GT-40, 351/5.8 liter, 310HP
PCM Chevy Python, 496/8.1 liter, 425HP (this is the block that used to go into Corvettes)

I guess the PCM Chevy 5.0 liter, 275 HP was only the base engine for the direct drives (ski versions). The GT-40 and Python blocks were options on the direct drives as well, don't know if the Apex block was.

The 305/5.0 chevy is still rated at 0ver 285 HP. The little motor is a powerhouse up to about 4500 rpm, then it reall starts falling off. Now if you are a bit of a gear head it does not take a whole lot to get a strong performing 305. after all the jersey speed skiff guys are getting up near 80plus mph out of a 305 in a direct drive application and atwo barrel!!!

thanks everyone for the info., the 5.0 will probably do fine for my family., will use the boat to teach the kids how to ski and kneeboard. I'm well past my foot'in days and doubt the kids will be interested to learn. I was just surprised the boat had this engine. Get this, the boat has less than 100 hrs and never skied behind. The owner says they just used the boat to tour around the lake. How odd is that? the digital gauges have been replaced with faria mechanical gauges and comes with single axle trailer for an asking price of $15,900. Does this sound reasonable? The owner says the boat shows new but doesn't have many options.

The hours are not odd at all. I have seen boats come into my buddies dealership with less hours than that and older boats. He bought back a 89 ski from the guy who bought it new from him with 124 hours on it.

Is this a good deal for this time of year?

i would say $16k may be a little high. that boat isn't all that desirable with that engine, especially this time of year. not saying it won't perform well, just that most people want the GT-40.

maybe offer $14k? that seems more realistic for this time of year. don't think you could lose at that price if the boat is everything the guy says it is.

I disagree with the latter part of that one.

They can foot just fine behind or next to a 305 for many years.

[quote="AirTool"][quote="jlcumminsdiesel"]Iok. I stand corrected. Not only that but those videos inspired me to retract the whole statement. It's been 18 years since I've barefooted but I will be doing it again. Once the kids see me do it they will want to learn. I'm 37 now and my legs have taken a beaten from the telecom industry but I feel refreshed from seeing those videos. Now I need a boat that will pull me and the kids! I live in ohio so I have a few months before boating season, but I can't wait.

Back in September I had a 40-something shortline from the boom in his new custom BF suit. He had been a footer in high school. His two tweens were in the the spotter seat yelling "Look at Dad. He's doing it !!! He's doing it !!!"
