    engine hours

Does anyone know how boat engine hours equate to vehicle engine hours? Naturally a boat engine runs at much higher revs than a car engine, but what effect does that have on longevity? I noticed 600 hours on a new Tahoe is around 15,000 miles, so that's why I ask. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I have 53,500 miles on my truck with 2,530 hours on it.

The mile vs. hour ratio will vary depending on the driving conditions though. Being stuck in traffic for 1 hour and only moving 15 miles vs. driving at 60 mph in that hour will make a difference. At such a rate you would need 4 hours in traffic to drive the same 60 miles you drove in 1 hour without traffic.

Over about 25,000 km's on my truck since I put in an hour meter for interest...I religiously change the oil about every 5,000 km's and at that time I check the hour meter and it seems to me to be in the area of about 100 hours.
This is small town driving not sitting in long rush hours. Frequent highway drives for a couple hours. Not so frequent highway drives for about 4 hours.
It surprised me how often 100 hours came up at each oil change.
In a summer in these northern climes I might put on about 20 hours on my boat. The boat currently has something a little over 700 hours of which about 60 are mine.
      Obviously YMMV

Supposedly the national average is 60 hours per season on a boat, which I guess is why people freak out when you try to sell them a boat with over 300 ticks on it.

A similar topic came up on the waterski forum. One thing that was mentioned that freaked me out. I'm boatless at the moment so can't check. It was brought up that every time you turn the motor on, the hour meter goes up by 0.1. Can anyone confirm that?

If that is true, could that be by design? Does start up do equivalent "damage" as 6 minutes of idle?
