Actually, a vast majority of petroleum comes from the carbon decay of microscopic organisms and plankton-like creatures that lived in the sea and shallow lakes. Don't ask how I know.

I watched How the earth was made last night on the history channel. The earth is 7.5 billion years old. Thats a lot of Zeros in a Billion. We are the mere speck in time of that 7.5 billion span. The earth was here long before we showed up and will be here long after. If you think we have the power to change nature, good luck as she will surely kick our tails when she is sick of us.Life long Nautique guy

the earth is not 7.5 billion years old. scientists have found that is may take as little as 50 years for something to decay and fossilize. there is more oil in russia than ever thought about in middle east. just some fun facts for ya.
also ethanol was started to help subsidize gas and help with the enviroment. unfortunately this is a joke. if you took every kernel of corn in the WORLD you could only power 9% of the cars in america for a DAY. also not to mention the production of ethanol produces more green house gases, aka worse on enviroment, than the production of gas. the government refused to abandon this due to the fact that they came out and claimed it was the answer and did not want to admit they were wrong and various other politics were apart.04 SANTE 210

I'm in the oil industry and I can attest that there is more oil available than is ever reported right off our coastlines. We are finding huge untapped reserves in the Gulf all the time. The problem is making sure the price stays high enough to keep it profitable. $60-$70 a barrel is perfect. It cost millions per day to have deep water operations in the GOM and the North Sea. No matter what you read in the newspapers or on CNN, there is more than enough oil to power the world for the foreseeable future. Is it going to change? Sure, but not like it is being made out to. We will not see the end of oil as we know it for some time even if we tripled consumption. If we could only get some more refineries built.
I know people who do seismic testing and there is plenty. Russia and the xxxistan countries aren't even tapped yet and they are loaded. To quote my bud, the largest reserves he's ever personally tested for. All that oil will be tied into Kuwaiti/Iraqi/UAE ports to get shipped out eventually (why do you think we have such an interest there).
No one mentioned BTU content of ethanol yet. Not only is it more expensive, it also LOWERS mpg and takes more to go the same distance. This is one of the main reasons the governing bodies have relaxed the deadlines for ethanol mixes from the original proposals.
One more note. Carbon based life has been on Earth for about 3.5 billion years (about a billion after the solar system and Earth were formed). Humans have been using fossil fuels largely for about 200 years. You do the math.

I am dropping my History Channel subscription. They told me the universe is 7.9 billion old and that the earth was formed around 7.5 bil. Started out as space dust and gravitated into a round ball of iron, nickle and rock. Soon after it melted and the heavy metals sank to the inner core and the lighter rock ended up on the surface. They have found rock formations 7.3 billion years old on the north shore of the Hudsen Bay. Since that time the world has dipped into at least 3 ice ages. (for all of you glbl warming wackos, that means that the earth was covered in ICE) Again, send the troops to Coppenhagen and arrest all of those loons and do not let them see the light of day until the next ice age.Life long Nautique guy
