    Do I want brakes on both axles?

    I am buying a new trailer and going to put an order in tomorrow more than likely. I have the option for brakes on both axles or on just one of the 2. It will cost a total of about 200 more.

    I wasnt sure if it was worth it to get it or is the cost not justified or is there a lot of more money needed for maintenece blah blah.

    What are your thoughts?

      Check your state law, which may require brakes on both axles. IMHO, spend the $$$ and get brakes on both axles, it'll be worth it.

        I love this question, because I would be doing the exact same thing if it was my money.

        Since it's not. Buy the extra brakes. The trailer is going to be brand new, so maintenance should be a non-issue for a while.
        Plus you're pulling a $25k or more boat, $200 for brakes seems pretty inexpensive insurance.

          I posted this question on wakeworld and one person made a good point. He said he had brakes on both axles and when he emergency stopped, he lost control of the trailer, it was all over the place I guess. He now has only one set of brakes so 2 tires are always connected to the road to guide it straight. Makes sence.

          MN does not require a specified braking system other than over 3000 lbs needs to have brakes. I am pulling it with a 2003 Toyota tundra V8. It would be an improvement just to have brakes because of the last 3 trailers I haeve had with 3 boats, all have had brakes, and not one of them functioned.

            I would want the extra braking power for sure and that it would be much safer.

              I pull an 89 Supra Sunsport tandem 4 wheel drum brakes 5500 lbs and a 08 210 4 wheel disk brakes 6000 lbs.
              I will say I can stop faster with the boats than without. IMO get the brakes you only need them once to make it worth it.

                Agree 100% here. I sold my '07 196 w/ a tandem to a guy in PA and he had a heck of a time getting a license because there weren't brakes on both axles.

                  I have a 07 196 with disc brakes on just one of the axles and I am pleased with the performance. I pull with a 3/4 ton truck with 4 wheel discs brakes so I have plenty of stopping power. I had no problem registering the trailer in Texas. Under 4000 lbs requires no inspection.

                    I wonder if his vehicle was too small to stop such a big trailer. That is a common mistake.

                    Surge brakes shouldn't do that....especially with all four wheels braking.

                    If they were electric with a controller, it wasn't set right.
