Dripless packing gland?

Hello,
I'm thinking of ordering a 05 SANTE. The salesman said that I do not need a dripless gland. What does it do exactly, and would you guys order a new boat w/o it?

I think it is a known fact that the dripless packing gland is a good new thing. Please get it. The definition of it that it is not a rope seal that seals the shaft. The old way is that it drips through.

My understanding of it is that basically the packing gland is the material that is placed around the hole where the shaft goes through the engine compartment.

A normal packing gland allows water to drip through. This water is used as lubrication for the shaft. These can become loose over time and need to be re-tightened and repacked.

A dripless packing gland is just how it sounds…it doesn’t rely on water dripping through for lubrication. Dripless packing glands also aren’t supposed to need to be repacked.

When I ordered my boat I went the dripless route. It wasn’t very much money and I decided it would be well worth it to remove one additional item of maintenance.

If you've got a v-drive you're gonna want a dripless packing gland. If you ever had to adjust it, I don't think you could get two wrenches down there to do the job.
Also, another thing about the dripless packing gland, it takes water from the engine cooling system and pumps a portion of it to the dripless packing to provide the cooling necessary. So, if you run the boat out of water you'll get water coming out of the shaft seal onto your driveway. No big deal just an FYI

Are you saying the is a hose going to the packless gland? I never seen one, I thought the shaft seal was sealed with an o-ring. Could you put up a photo?

There is a small hose going to the dripless packing gland on my 02 196. Cools the shaft.

So thaaats what that thing does... uhh... looks like we did more damage than I thought when we hit that 2x6!

Lets say that some one just happens to have a drippless packing gland and it just happens to start leaking out water when the boat happens to be pulled... does this happen to be a bad thing? I'm asking because... of... uhh... my friend... :scratch:
