    Insuring my 2000 Air Nautique

I have been told by my insurance agent that my GT 40 motor with 300 hp is too hot for a 21ft boat. Any ideas out there for insurance options?

    Thanks for the help.

sounds like you need to tell your agent that this isn't a high speed boat. that it is made to pull skiers and wakeboarders. that the top speed is about 45 not 70 mph.

My auto/home insurance guy did a double take too when I told him the HP in my 196. Look for a ski boat specific company like Ski Safe. It'll be WAY cheaper.

I'm with BoatUS they only insure boats. They will have a specific policy for your boat. They also will do a stated value policy if your boat is worth more than the average boat.
My boat is 21' with 344 HP it was no problem.

I too suggest you go with a company that insures boat as its main business, not an auto insurance company that is looking to skim more profit.

If you are a member of USA Waterski, you can insure through them, with Global Marine Insurance.

I have tried a few times to shop around for insurance on my Ski Nautique, and most automotive insurance companies will only insure you as a driver, unless you state at the time the policy is written who the other drivers are, and they will want all the extensive personal information for every driver your boat has, for you to ski behind it.

You can take a USCG (United States Coast Guard) auxiliary boating course, and it probably will qualify you for a fairly good discount on your insurance. The information you learn by taking one is actually more valuable than the discount you get.

I actually went with Progressive as they are partnered with my other insurance provided with USAA. I got the same or better coverage than the quote from SkiSafe.

                  Shawn,

I'm not sure where you are located. I use Western Marine. They only do boats/watercraft. I have been very pleased with them. I have also heard good things about Progressive.

Your insurance guy doesn't seem to have been around too long based on his lack of knowledge. Is he new to the insurance industry?

I have Allstate and they have been great. I even had a "Sunk on Trailer" claim and had zero issues..

I use Foremost through my Farmer's agent. WAY cheaper than what Ski Safe could do for me and a MUCH better policy. Great service too.

Foremost is less then Ski Safe - I'll have to look into that, I use Farmers. I have a 99 Sport value set at $20K, annual cost is $233, Layup period (no use) set at Nov 1 to March 1
