I would like to know if there are any changes happening to the 2005 SN 196. I've heard rumors of a "gate" ?? What is it for?? Is there anything else??

Welcome to the site. No changes to the hull for 05. The Hydro gate thing is still a bit of a mystery. Here is the link to a recent discussion on this board.

I wouldn't get your hopes up for the gate. If it does come to production, it will be very limited (most likely not to everyone (promo drivers only)). The only other changes to the boat are polk momo speakers, a new bezel around the radio remote and that is about it. These changes went to every boat in the lineup. The gate will do nothing for slalom skiers anyways. It only changes wake characteristics for trickers and provides a little more power for jumpers.

Besides the changes already mentioned, these are some others that I have seen.
Appearance: A Nautique Logo was mounted on top of the blove box. The Vortec/PCM Logo that was mounted on the stern of the boat (both sides) has been removed.
Engine: The fill riser to the water pump was replaced from a rubber hose to a pipe. The engine cover is still red but the graphics have changed.
Performance: The rudder has changed. It is longer and provides you with better handling.
Comfort and Convenience: Besides the RCA plugs that are mounted in the glove box, you also have a 12v power source. The drivers seat seems to have been lowered or the back support tilted back, don't know which. At any rate, on the '05 you have a better view than on the '04. By this I mean that on the '04 (depending on your height), the windshield frame obstructed the view, on the '05 this is no longer the case, at least for me. You seem to be sitting lower which provides an unobstructed view. I doubt they made any changes to the windshield so the other simple and logical option is the seat.

Twintip... I'm only 5'6" but when I use the booster seat when docking, just b/c i like being high up and have a view of all sides of the boat, the windshield is right in my face... I think lowering the seat would be a plus... maybe this is only a problem on the 206 and 216 b/c the windshield on those are a lot more slanted...I Nautique, therefore I am.

Skinautique,
That is strange. I have compared two 196 '05 models (both non promo) against early and late '04 models. On the first one, I only compared the rudders visually and there is clearly a difference in size. On the '05 model, the rudder is longer than on the '04 model. On the second one, I actually measured the length (top to bottom) and the rudder on the '05 was 1 inch longer than on the '04. Depth wise (bow to stern), the rudder was the same size on both models.
I wonder why CC would say that the rudder did not change. Maybe they made the change really late on the '04 models.
