After ridiculous price quotes from upholstery shops, I finally found someone that will do my hatch lid for a reasonable price.
I am set on removing all the color from my hatch lid in lieu of solid white due to the scorching sun and its effect on bare feet on colored vinyl. I was also thinking of removing all the seams from the deck lid to aid in the longevity of the vinyl that is going there. My boat sees quite a bit of traffic with 2 (soon to be 3) kids under the age of 10 and a swim deck that doubles as a diving board. The upholsterer (who has been doing this longer than I have been alive) recommended this for both water intrusion into the stitching and foot traffic. He is more than happy to add the seams, but cautions against it. It seems like anywhere a boat has a seam in vinyl, it eventually begins to degrade at that point first, regardless of material weight or age. Seams are a weak point. I had seams removed from several areas in seats and bow fillers in my last boat for this reason and it looked great, but it wasn't as large of an area.
Has anyone ever had the lid recovered with seamless vinyl and how did it look? Do you have pictures? I am concerned about the look of the area without any texture from the stitching.
