What are you paying for insurance?

Just got my insurance bill. 2003 ski206 limited insured at $250K/$500K liability and full collision with a $500 deductible is costing me $580 a year. Is this in the ballpark? Incidentally, they have the value of the boat and trailer at $40,000. That seems high for a 2 year old boat with 65 hours.

If you want your cost of a policy to go down raise your deductable. I went with a high deductable because the chance of an accident while boating is very low. As far as the value of your boat check and see if you have a value stated policy? On a value stated policy if you boat is totaled they pay the value stated weather your boat is two years old or ten years old. Unlike a car that depreciates in value on your insurance policy your boat holds it's value if it is totaled. I pay less for my policy through voyagermarine.com For me they are a local company.

You can also reduce your costs by having a "lay-up" period. Just pick 4 months out of the year when you agree not to use your boat. That usually pans out real well cuz the weather sucks. They (Ski-Safe) also will agree to let you use it during the lay-up a couple of times if you call and ask permission first.

I think I payed 368/ yr for my 03 X-Star. I went with a higher deductable 1000 or 1500? Its also layed up for the winter. Ive been happy with Ski Safe but have not had to file a claim. Other than paying them once a yr I have had little contact. And thats OK!! lol... They get you for that waterski magizine subscription every year too, don't forget. At first it annoyed me. I want boat insurance not a magazine but its grown on me over the years. Good luck!!
