Wally - is it a Universal Term?

I've been wondering...since I grew up on the lake before the internet, I've always wondered if the lingo we used back in the day was universal. For instance, does everyone else call weekend boaters "Wallys"? I guess I just always assumed that everyone did.

    Anybody got any other lingo?

We called them either wallys or wankers. Wanker is more reserved for the guys who have a tower, but no ability - usually the obligatory Air Bayliner:-)

This is my theory. There used to be an old cartoon called "Wally Gator". The cartoon opened up with a sequence of the main character Wally Gator tearing up in a tiller steered fishing boat, through the swamp or bayou the cartoon was set in.

I learned to operate a boat safely by watching the boat chase in the James Bond movie "live and Let Die".

            Wally

I figured it might have been from Roy G Wally of Wallyworld from the Original Vacation movie.

dang....weekend boaters? sucks to know i'm a wally. working from 8:30am-8:00pm every weekday eliminates any chance of getting to the lake during week, especially since I work in Houston. the only time I can get on the lake is the weekends.

I wish I could be on the lake during week. Must be nice.

Term doesn’t match the dictionary at all! Never bothered looking it up before tonight.
                  Wally
                  1. fine; splendid.
                  2. strong.

Wanker is a new one…I would say we call a Wally someone who clearly doesn’t have experience boating or at the ramp. So yes typical Wally is a weekender, but if you have somewhat of a clue of what your doing then not so. So TRO hope that puts you out of the Wally category. Lol.

myself and friends who are riders have always said wallys. or other choice words. for instance when i came up after falling of my wakeskate to see a jetski about 20 feet from my face coming at me. you can imagine what was said.

We have many more bass fishers than riders and skiers up here in Vermont.Ever since the professional bass tours started coming to Lake Champlain every wahoo thinks he the next great fisherman. These guys love to rip by just under mach one usually about 80 feet off your starboard, especially when you have a rope out.We affectionately call these gentlemen Bass holes

Looks like i'm a Wanker. I have a tower, but there is an 210 under it. So maybe I can be a wanker on steriods!! I can do a slide...

We use the term B a s s h o le s for the fishermen that zigzag the river. We have other names for the skiers that like to turnaround real fast to pick up their skier. On the river we all can have calm water if you follow a couple rules.

                        1. Don't zigzag. follow the shore line. Keep your wake point directly up and down river. This allows to water to roll off the shore.

                        2. NO power turns. When the skier falls, bring the boat to idle, wait for the back of the boat to lift, then make your turn. IDLE back to your skier. Going 2000 RPM just pulls a roller up behind you and send it down river til it hit the next shore. you would be better off going back wide open if you are not going to idle. Have signals with your skier. We wave if we are ok after a fall. If the skier doesn't wave we zip back to assist.

Wanker is actually a very derogatory term used universally, particularly in Australia, England and other realms of the Queen. It can not be defined on this web site as it is unapropiate. But does describe some boaters and un-educated skiers / boarders.

Wally was a term for skiers that wanted to run the course with their Ski-Feces AKA small outboard, big stern drive, other non inboard boats taking out bouys and not replacing them. They predominantly showed up on weekends and were called Weekend Wally's!

Lake Lice: PWC, Jet ski, wave runner, etc. Riders of these can also be Wankers and most are Wally's as they seem to want to run the slalom course on weekends tearing out bouys with their machines.

B*******s says it all and does not need more description.

                            Wallys and Mosquitoes

I am sure my brother didn't coin this term (because he is not that creative), but he calls jet skis and seadoos mosquitoes. I think that is a perfect name because they buzz around everywhere making a bunch of noise (and waves) and you really want to slap them down. There is nothing quite so enjoyable as watching a seadoo do 5 consecutive figure eights while you are getting your line tight to ski.

Having said that, they sure are fun to ride. If I owned one I am sure I might feel differently.

I've learned a lot on this thread. Looks like i'm a Wanker and a Wally. Being I travel 5 days a week I only get to boat on the weekends.
