How can you check engine hours?

Knowing a lot of the SAN's from around 2000, give or take a couple of years, have had their gauges go bad, how can you check the engine hours? I've seen "hook a computer" up, but what are you really hooking up, and what are you hooking it up to?

    Thanks!

If the boat had perfect pass since new, the hours on the PP should be accurate.

In terms of hooking up to the engine's computer system, everything I have read has said that
the engine hours are not stored in the Ford engine's computer. On the Chevy engine's the
computer keeps track of the hours.

Check the service records. You could also have a mechanic do a compression test on the engine, or even better a leakdown test.
The general condition of the boat is also a clue on how the boat was treated. Test drive any boat you want to possibly buy.
There are also Marine surveyers that check the condition on boats, buy thier services are generally used on larger yachts, and boats.

How do you get to the engine hours on the PP?

Also, does anyone know of a good tool to read the ECM on PCM Chevy engines? PCM recommended a $700 software and cable kit but that is out of the question for me. Will any OBD scanners work?

Can't answer that Steve. I've never taken the time to figure it out. I have read multiple times on this forum that the PP stores the hours, so I believe it to be true. Someone should be along who knows how to do so.

i think on the old perfectpass you could press the up button and menu button simultaneously to get into the engine hours. you might have to push menu a few times to scroll thru the different options.
