    Ford Expedition EL

I don't want to create another 10 page tow vehicle thread, but I am thinking about getting rid of the 04 Suburban for an Expedition EL. I have a 97 Ski so power isn't an issue here. I am just wondering if any of you have an Expedtion and have real life mileage estimates with and without towing your boat.

I have an 07 Expedition with the 5.4. Without the boat, 13-14 mpg around town, towing down to about 12.

I will say that this is the best towing vehicle that I have ever had.

She is an old 2001 4.6 Expedtion with 160,000 miles but pulls my boat everyday during the summer just fine.

What year models are you looking at? We just bought an 05 and are pleased with it. We test drove a 2010 and were disapointed with power. Our 05 has 3.73 gears and the newer one had 3.31s. My best advice would be to make sure it has the lower gears if you plan on towing much. We have not had it long enough to truly check mileage but I think it gets up to 19 mpg on the highway.

Looking at 2007-2009, I have my eye on an 07 with the 3.73 rear end. I really hate to buy another car, but no one can tell me whats wrong with my Suburban, not even the dealership. It just stalls out while driving on long trips in hot weather. As soon as the sun sets I'm good to go.

Calculated, not the lie-o-meter, our last tank got 14.3 mpg around town with about 20-25 miles towing the boat. So 15 mpg could be expected around town with the lower gear set, the extra gear in 07 and up should get right at 20 mpgs on the highway.

You definitely want the 07+, the 6 speed tranny the 07+ have is much better for mpg than the 4 speed they had up to 06.

Even with lower numerical gear ratios, the 07+ will tow better and be quicker with more mpg to boot.

2 gears is a huge upgrade to gain.

I have a 99 Navigator that got 14.5 new and now gets 13 or so. I pulled my 206 1050 miles at 70 mph and the lie-o-meter reported 12.5 but the gas receipts calculated 11.5. This fall, the plan is to salvage that old truck.

I just bought a 2010 F150 and I haven't been impressed with the six speed tranny. It is smooth accellerating but downshifts in town and quick stops are a bit clunky IMO. I've not tried pulling a trailer yet.

mpg on the new truck (super crew) is 18 while on 65 mph cruise; 15.5 average trip (500 miles Houston to Hattiesburg); and about 13.8 in the city. Again, haven't pulled the trailer but I'm sure mpg will go down one or two.

that's about the exact same mpg as what i get in my 2008 5.3L crew cab z71 4x4. only mine went down to 8 mpg when towing. sigh....

sorry for the off subject rant. carry on gentlemen.

Airtool, perhaps your new 6 speed may need a reflash to solve the downshift hashness.

Your mpg's will go up after fully broken in, and it will have a bit more power too.

What gear ratio and motor did you get?

I've been looking to upgrade to a used 07+ expedition myself. My old jeep grand cherokee sucks at towing my martinique. The v8 4runner tows it well, but gets crappy mpg towing.

I'm still kicking myself for not buying that clean excursion ltd 5.4 for $4500 a couple years back.

Argh! Let the dealer mess with it?

5.4 is the only engine in Super Crew....next year there should be a 6.2 but I couldn't wait....needed it for business back in March.

Rear end is a 3.55 I believe. I know I have the standard gear ratio that is higher gear...lower number. I believe the other axle is 3.73
